Tank Multi Fan
My goldfish is not at all well : (?

He is moping around the bottom of the tank, and looking rather lethargic.
His beautiful fan tail is not 'full of life' .... it hangs in tatters.
He is still eating. I've added a multi cure to the water (made the water green)
He does not have spots, although his gold/orange color is duller than usual.
I think it may be fin rot ...... what is the best cure for this ?????

Any advice would be appreciated as he is over 4 years old.
thanks

If it is fin rot (which it does sound like), then as well as treating with medication you also need to fix the cause of the illness. Fin rot is usually caused by stress, which in turn is often caused by poor water quality, so you need to look at his aquarium and make sure everything is okay. Your fish will need good water quality in order to heal and prevent re-infection.

So, is the tank big enough? A single fantail goldfish should ideally be in a 30 gallon tank.
Is the filter adequate? Double filtration is a must for goldfish, as they produce so much waste.
What is your water change regime? Frequent, small water changes are better than large infrequent water changes. In a properly sized, filtered tank you should be aiming for around a 25-30% water change every week.
Do you vacuum the gravel regularly? And net out any food he doesn't eat? A build up of waste and old food will make your water quality bad.
Do you test your water regularly? Ammonia and nitrite need to be zero, and nitrate should be 20ppm or less.

Four years is not very old for a goldfish, so he should have many more years left if you can get him fixed up icon smile Tank Multi Fan
