Would a black light CFL (compact fluorescent) bulb work for hunting for scorpions?
Want to put together the most powerful black light I can afford for the purpose of finding scorpions around my house and inside. I'm thinking that using a power cord with a compact fluorescent black light bulb at the end might be the best way to do it. I've heard that the incandescent black lights aren't good enough, and the battery operated ones are really expensive at that power level. Does anyone know if this would work?
It works! They show up purple. I did road hunting in Arizona with one plugged into the cigarette lighter. Very cool!

In recent years, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) have been rapidly gaining in popularity and use. Although they have some disadvantages, the major advantages over traditional incandescent bulbs make compact fluorescent light bulbs the best choice overall.
Light production in compact fluorescent bulbs works differently than in incandescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs, a technology well over 100 years old, produce light by heating a wire filament with an electric current until it glows. A gas mixture in the bulb keeps the filament from overheating. As the mixture gradually seeps out of the bulb, the bulb eventually burns out.
Heat from a bulb is lost energy that has is not producing light. Incandescent bulbs burn hot and nearly 95% the energy they consume is wasted. A compact fluorescent bulb produces light when electricity runs through a tube containing argon and a small amount of mercury vapor. The light generated by this is an invisible ultraviolet light, but this invisible light excites a fluorescent coating inside of the tube to produce a visible light.
This method of lighting does not produce nearly as much heat and is much more efficient. Although they take slightly more power the moment they are switched on, CFLs generally use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.
While CFLs are not new and have been used in business for a while, they had several disadvantages, which have since been corrected, that kept them out of most homes. They needed special light fixtures, took several seconds to light, made a buzzing noise and tended to flicker annoyingly.
Advantages CFLs over incandescent bulbs
-They only require 1/4 as much electricity (25% of electricity used in homes is taken up by lighting)
-They produce 90% less heat (thus reducing cooling costs while making them easier to handle)
-They last up to ten times longer
Disadvantages of CFLs
-They cost more (but save money overall with lower electricity and replacement costs)
-Most cannot be used with a dimmer switch
-They dim in cold locations
-It takes CFLs 15-30 seconds to get near their maximum brightness
CFLs have also been criticized for containing mercury. It should be noted though that the amount is very low and the bulbs can be recycled. Overall, their net release of mercury into the environment is lower than traditional bulbs since they require less power and power generation also releases mercury.
With their efficiency longer lifetimes and relatively minor drawbacks, compact fluorescents are superior to incandescent bulbs for most usages.
