Pond Fish Tank
Pond Fish Tank
Is there a way to change the alkalinity in a pond and fish tank?
Outdoor pond. Saltwater Fish tank.
The PH in the fish tank is around 7.8 but the tank is still cycling and I will be adding live rock.
Add drift wood if you want to make the water more acidic. The drift wood releases tannins. You'll know it's working when the water changes a slightly brown color.
Add crushed coral as a substrate to a tank if you want to make the water more basic. Basic is another word for alkaline. The coral is made up of calcium carbonate, which reacts with acid to first neutralize the acid and then slowly buffer the pH upward into the basic range. You'll know that your crushed coral substrate is the right stuff if, when you take a handful of it and pour and acid like vinegar over it, it bubbles.

Having a pond in your home can be the ultimate expression of freedom for the avid fish lover out there, as it signifies an evolution from the aquarium to the next level. Aside from being an aesthetic privilege, having a pond gives you ample space to rear your aquatic creatures, and allows you to fulfill your long hidden ambitions to the fullest.
One of the most important things new pond owners should take note of is how to keep your pond clean. Fish, or any other form of aquatic life form, be it flora or fauna, require a habitual environment which will encourage their growth, not discourage them. Living under unhygienic conditions can breed sickness or ill-will, and it's the same for the living things in your pond. It is crucial that you understand what stays in the pond, and what should stay out of the pond.
Pond water treatment can come in a variety of forms, from ultrasound filters to crystal cubes. Your pond's immediate surroundings, water quality and fish species will determine what type of treatment you should use. Some fish respond better to certain kinds of treatment, and can be poisoned by others. For that reason, you need to understand what type of treatment will work for your fish and what won't.
Take for instance the pairing of bio-converters with koi fish. Bio-converters work well in any pond whether big or small, and are compatible with nearly all kinds of fish. Its workings are rather complex to explain in detail, but in a nutshell, it makes use of the presence of uneaten food, fish waste and natural gases in the pond to degrade unwanted toxins naturally. However, certain variants of koi and smaller fish may face difficulties living in ponds which use bio-converters, as it tends to release high amounts of ammonia. By itself, ammonia is harmless to fish in tolerable quantities, but a certain type of bacteria which presents itself around koi, Nitrosomonas bacteria, consumes ammonia and chemically transforms them into nitrate compounds. This can be good and bad. The nitrate compounds encourage the growth of algae, providing food for the koi which in turns produces more ammonia to feed the cycle, but in excess quantities, can block oxygen transfer from the gills to the blood and may cause gill damage. This is why koi fish are sometimes seen "gasping" for air at the water's surface; indicating potential ammonia poisoning.
Therefore, it is important to understand what kind of fish respond to what kind of treatment, and how to pair them appropriately. If you're treating your pond with alkaline filters, it may promote breeding of freshwater flukes which feed on the gills and mucus of goldfish in particular. Guppies may be under threat from certain types of water clearing pharmaceuticals.
If you notice that your fish is exhibiting unusual symptoms, heed the voice of caution and do some research to find out what might be wrong. Understanding what type of pond treatment you use can be crucial to your fish's health.
