Is it my transformer that's humming?

I bought an allegedly new cheap Metal Halide spotlight for an aquarium project of ebay and it hums like a ........(insert word).

I am guessing it is the transformer as the only other components apart from the bulb are a coil and a capacitor.

If I mounted the transformer on rubber washers do you think that'd help?

Anyone else conquored a similar problem?

transformers do tend to hum, especially if their coating has come off (if they had much of one at all) rubber washers should help any noise that is coming from vibration of the unit AGAINST something else. but the little metal plates in a transformer are probably causing the original vibration.

i'm not too familiar with the specific electrical requirements of metal halide lights. is the transformer a cheap transformer that can just be replaced with a better one that is rated for a higher throughput:?

The amount of money you have in your budget will determine the kind of light that you choose. Consider the cost of replacing the bulbs, as you will have to replace them at some point.
