will liquid or tablet fertilizers harm fish in a planted tank?

I suppose if you overdose the tank with fertilizers you could harm the fish. I've been using plant fertilizers for months with no problems to my fish. Because you can't use carbon in your filter when you use fertilizers the water quality might harm the fish, if not kept up to fish standards.
