what are some cool freshwater aquarium species?

I mean besides fish. I know about snails and crayfish and pond clams but is there anything else? it would be ok if it needed a little salt as long as it didnt need a lot of care or any fancy equipment. i have an aquarium, thermometer, heater, light, filter, hood, and aerator. Even sails or crayfish or clams would be ok if they were really awesome and exotic looking.its for my mom-fish tanks calm her. oh and no frogs-her boyfriend already has some and she dosent like them. like i said though-nothing hard to care for

Check out this snails I would love some but can't get them in Australia due to quarantine laws but maybe you can. Check out the gaint apple snail in the 3rd site its sitting on a coke can to show how big they get. Have a look at some other invertebrates. Have you given any thoughts to turtles don't know much about them sorry just a thought.
