i have a penguin bio-wheel filter that uses carbon media?

do i really need the carbon? can i buy media that is just the floss? if i do buy media without carbon how often should i change it? what are your opinions for carbon or against carbon, i want to have a planted tank with live plants. would the media without carbon fit my filter?

carbon is nice and all, but you dont NEED it. i dont know where you can get the cartridges without the carbon however...if you can find some then you really just need to change it out when its all clogged up or you can just clean it.

i personally like carbon, as it helps keep the water clear. but if its too much of a pain for you, you can do without it. the most important part of the filtration system is the nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which is on the biowheel (never clean it!)
