Aquarium Power Compact
Power compact lighting for aquarium?
Coralife Power Compact light fixture - 2 x 65watt actinic and daylight.
will these lights be able to keep corals under them
what size is the aquarium?
Generally speaking power compacts will be able to keep soft corals, zoanthids, mushrooms, and some LPS. Leaving out SPS and anemones.
My 10 gallon has 2 X 40 watt power compacts and my corals are thriving.
So it depends on your tank size and what you plan on keeping as "corals" can be a wide varity of different animals.

One of the most important and often overlooked pieces of equipment in your saltwater aquarium is your marine aquarium lighting system. With maybe the exception of deep water fish, most fish need natural light in order to stay healthy, especially during cold weather. Of course, depending on the type of aquatic life that you are keeping your tank, the choice of aquarium lighting will be affected. This article will help try and sift through this potentially complicated subject.Â
There are basically four types of bulbs that you can use in your tank. They are fluorescent lighting, incandescent bulbs, power compact lighting, and metal halide bulbs.Â
Fluorescent lighting (full-spectrum)Â
This is basically considered to be one of the preferred types of bulbs to use. Over time, the track record of this type of lighting has been very very good. These lamps have a lifecycle of about two years before they need to be replaced, and they tend to be on the cheaper side in the replacement cost. Their light quality and light quantity is also very good for the amount of money that she will spend. Some of the features that these lights provide, are the abilities to adjust spectral lumen and shift depreciation. Another name for this type of lighting is called VHO, or very high output, and is a very good option if you are going to keep lots of live plants. They can also work for reef aquariums. One of the drawbacks however, is that they generally need a ballast system for them to work properly, and these tend to be costly.Â
Incandescent bulbsÂ
These type of bulbs are a good lighting source especially for live plants. The problem is, they do generate a lot of heat so keeping your aquarium water at the right temperature may be a little bit trickier. They also use a lot of electricity which will not be good for your electric bill; however the bulbs themselves are very cheap so replacing them is not expensive.Â
Power compact lighting
if you're planning to have a reef or life plant aquarium, then this popular bulb may be just what you looking for. This type of lighting can provide a slightly better output than some of the other bulbs and art generally available in two configurations which are known as linear or square. For this reason, if you go with this type of lighting you want to buy replacement bulbs at the same time. A word of caution though, make sure that you do not exceed the recommended wattage as a script calls an electrical problem including sparks.Â
Metal halide bulbs
This is a very desirable type of lighting system when you consider the quality of light. They are very expensive, and one of the drawbacks is that they produce high levels of ultraviolet radiation. If you choose this you need to make sure that they are designed for saltwater aquariums and that they have a filter to take care of the ultraviolet radiation problem.
So this is just a small sample of the type of marine aquarium lighting available. The subject can get very complicated, so you should do your research before you buy anything. Once you've decided the type of fish you're going to keep, and whether or not you're going to use life aquarium plants, then you can choose your lighting source.
