Setting Up A Tropical Fish Tank

A fish tank aquarium can bring beauty and splendor of tropical fish or fresh water in your home or office, and if you follow aquarium its principles when setting up your tank you will provide years of enjoyment.

Planning your aquarium

A visit to your local pet store or breeder fish specialist will help you decide what type of fish you would like to have in your new tank fish aquarium. The store personnel will also help you decide on the proper size tank for the space and provide all equipment and the necessary accessories you'll need.

However, do not buy fish, yet! You must establish your tank before putting a fish in it.

The first step is to clean the tank. Do not skip this important step, just because the glass of the aquarium seems clean. Use a mild detergent in warm water to scrub the tank. Rinse the tank thoroughly to remove all traces of debris and detergent. Emptying the tank cleaned several times with fresh water to ensure there are no traces of detergent left behind.

Also clean all the equipment to be used in your new tank of aquarium fish and rinse thoroughly. Even a small amount of detergent leftovers can kill fish does not skimp on the rinsing process. Gravel should be rinsed in tap water until the water is clear. Plants can be stored in a bucket of clean water while you set up your aquarium.

Is it ok to mount a lcd tv above an aquarium?

I have a 42" lcd tv and I am getting ready to set up a 55 gallon saltwater aquarium. I am thinking of mounting the tv on the wall and setting up the tank below the tv. I am just wondering if anyone has done this and what results did you have? Is evaporation a problem for the tv? I am open to any ideas/comments on the topic....thanks!!!
I have a fluval 305 canister filter...if that helps...thanks!

I haven't done this but it just sounds like one of those situations that's just waiting to go bad. Also depends on the filters you use. I know mine spalsh a lot some days, and get me even a foot away. Not much but still..

Im interested in buying a fish tank aquarium table. Im just wondering is the filtration on these new aqariums adaquate enough for tropical freshwater fish?

It can be fun to set up a fish tank aquarium but as in all hobbies it pays to do some research before you start. Before you purchase any fish you need to cycle the tank correctly to ensure that there are sufficient bacteria to cope with the waste products of your fish. We recommend a fishless cycling method detailed below.

Choosing the Tank

Fish tank aquariums can be purchased in glass or acrylic. Glass tanks are cheaper, are heavier and occasionally spring leaks. Acrylic tanks are more expensive, rarely leak, come in a variety of shapes but do scratch easily. Acrylic tanks usually last longer than glass tanks.

Fish Tank Shape

Acrylic tanks come in a variety of shapes including cylinder, hexagon, octagon and round as well as the traditional rectangular shape. There are also wall tanks and coffee table tanks. The traditional rectangular shape is still the best however as the water volume to surface area is a maximum giving good gas exchange. For other shapes, with smaller water volume to surface area ratio, maintenance will be higher and more frequent water changes will be needed.

In general buy the largest tank that will fit where you will be placing it and you can afford. A larger tank requires less maintenance and you can fit in more fish without risking overcrowding.

Fishless Cycling Method

Requirements

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate testing strips

Bacteria culture from an established tank - this can be some filter material or some gravel

Alternatively use a commercial preparation such as Colonize by Dr Foster & Smith or Biospira by Marineland
Unscented ammonia

Method

After adding the bacteria culture to your newly set up tank add 5 drops of ammonia for every ten gallons of water. Test for ammonia. If nothing registers add a few more drop until you get a reading. Continue to add the same amount every day until you can detect nitrites in the tank. Now add half the amount of ammonia daily until nitrate registers on the testing strip. At this point the nitrite levels should start to drop. When they reach zero the tank is cycled. Do a 30% water change and you are ready for your fish.

Choosing the Fish

Carefully research the types of fish that can be kept together. Community fish are those that live peacefully with each other. All the fish listed below are suitable for a tropical community fish tank.

Carefully inspect the fish tanks at the pet shop to make sure the fish look healthy and no dead fish are in the tanks. Research the fish you will be buying carefully and check up on their temperature and water quality requirements. Tropical fish will need a higher temperature than goldfish. Some fish are relatively peaceful when young but are bullies when fully grown. Tiger barbs are good examples of these.

Always avoid overcrowding. You will need a larger tank for bigger fish. For angel fish never use a tank smaller than ten gallons. After purchase never introduce fish to an established tank but quarantine in a separate tank for at least a week to ensure you do not introduce disease organisms into you tank.

Saltwater aquarium - Air pump advice please?

I have a 200 litre aquarium with an internal and external filter. I want to install an air pump to the tank (mainly for decorative purposes).

What equipment would you suggest and how easy is it to install??

You dont really use air pumps and stones in marine aquariums because it could be potientally harmful to the fish.

But a simple air pump, air tubing connecting to a check valve and then connected to any air stone will be the simpliest setup for an air pump in a marine and freshwater aquarium.

What kind of aquarium/tank fish is this?

Whenever I go to my dentist office, or other places that have tanks, I see this small fish about 3-4 inches. They are grey with a little black and they look like miniture nurse sharks.
They aren't Bala Sharks or Iridescent Sharks, and when I see them they don't move a lot, it actually doesn't move from the bottom it has a mouth on the bottom... like i said it always swims around the bottom of the tank.
they are gray with black spots on their back and they have s cylinder body, lt has the same shape of a nurse shark only it's about 4 inches.
has really tiny wiskers

In addition to above, a clown loach that has faded colors is a possibility, but I'm not confident enough to really say that's what it is. I have seen CL's stressed enough their typical brown was white/greyish in several local sellers. I'd think this is not the case and I'm thinking that you are saying shark as it has a top pointed fin? What is the overall body shape? Is it more cylindrical or more boxlike? Whiskers on it? How about the underfins? I'm figuring getting a picture for us is out of the question in this case, so alot of guessing is going to be involved.

setting up a marine tank using a 60 litre (16 gallon) aquarium?

i want to turn my 60 litre tank into a marine aquarium. what hard ware and other products do i need to do this? is lighting important (i don't plan to have coral just live rock). would you recommend a protein skimmer for this size tank? how many pumps would i need?

If you do not want coral but you want live rock then you will have a FOWLR setup.

There are 3 types of Marine aquarium:

FO (Fish Only)
FOWLR (Fish Only with Live Rock)
REEF (Reef Aquarium)

Things You Will Need:

Coral Sand (To Raise the pH):
Live Rock:
External Filter (internal are not adequate for marine tanks):
Protein Skimmer:
Marine Salt:
Fake Corals and other deco:
Normal Aquarium Lighting:
Air Pump (for mixing salt in the bucket)
Heater:
Hydrometer:

You only need high output lighting if you have corals and other REEF animals,
I would Recommend a Protein Skimmer as it will keep your tank much cleaner and help with water quality, but they are NOT Essential for a FOWLR setup like they are REEF aquariums, so its up to you on that one.

Keep the Temp a 75F or 24C
Keep the SP (Specific Gravity) from 1.020 - 1.025

Fish Wise for that size tank I would go for things like

Clownfish (Species of your choice but DON'T mix species!)
Firefish Gobies
Pajama Cardinalfishes:
Sand Sifting Gobies:
Avoid Damsels as they are Very Aggressive:
Skunk Cleaner Shrimp:
Turbo Snail etc...
