Metal Halide Compact

Growing with compact florescents?

I just bought a 150 watt (using 40 watts of electricity) compact florescent bulb to grow my tomatoes indoors with. It has an output of 3000k and 2600 lumens. Im just growing one plant, i was wondering if this would be sufficient. If not, any suggestions on a bulb that is not HID (metal halide, High pressure sodium, mercury vapor) but is cheap.

i appreciate any help!

It would be plenty for most house plants, but I doubt it will be for a tomato plant. They want tons of sun even when you plant them outdoors.

Aquarium lighting is not just used for decoration so that you can see your fishes clearly during the night. They are also needed and are an important part of a reef aquarium. The proper lighting in an aquarium allows corals and invertebrates to survive. Light for these creatures is needed as their source of photosynthesis so they can generate more energy and food. Without it they will wither and die. So the lighting should be treated as an essential part of an aquarium.

Lightings for an aquarium can be divided in four main types. They are the fluorescent lighting, compact fluorescent lighting, incandescent lighting and metal halide lighting. The basic parts in an aquarium lighting system are the hoods, timers, reflectors, shields and ballasts.

For a living room set up, fluorescent lighting is the ideal lighting to use. Fluorescent bulbs are also very safe and energy-efficient and are ideal for tropical fish. Fluorescent lights come in different wattages, colors and lengths and are rated according to milliamp.

Compact fluorescent lighting is similar to fluorescent lighting but is much more powerful, energy-efficient and a great source for high-intensity lighting. It is the ideal aquarium lighting for deeper tanks.

On the other hand, for both small and big aquariums Incandescent lighting is ideal because of its versatile and inexpensive qualities. For small aquariums such type of lighting is very advantageous because it can fit different types of bulbs into it but in a deeper aquarium, this type of lighting becomes a disadvantage because the brightness of light is inadequate and bulb life is short.

But if you are looking for a more compact and aesthetic appeal and don't like fluorescent lights then a metal halide lighting may be the right fit for you. This type of lighting is very popular for reef or planted aquarium as it can really give an intensive light source. Its bulbs come in different colors and temperatures can produce a considerable amount of heat that is very useful in raising the temperatures of the aquarium water.

In choosing the right basic parts in an aquarium lighting system, hoods that easily open up with ease would be the practical choice while glass hoods are ideal for aquariums that have a sophisticated mix-and-match lighting system. Metal Halide lamps which produce harmful UV radiation and high emissions of heat should have built-in fans and UV absorbent filters.

Timers are devices that automatically turn an aquarium lighting system on and off at the same time every day. Timers can also control lighting hoods that are fitted with electronic ballasts.

Reflectors are used to direct light where it is needed. You can choose between the two basic types. They are the divergent and convergent. These two types either scatter or focus right amount light rays into the aquarium.

A shield is piece of glass that keeps water away from the bulbs and also helps prevent glass from falling into the aquarium if a bulb should break. It also keeps heat away from the water and reduces the damage caused by UV emissions.

Then ballasts are used to regulate the voltage from the regular source. They prevent burn-out bulbs and fires.

So, you see, there are a lot of choices, a lot of parts to choose from and to consider, so that you can get the right aquarium lighting. But always remember that they are not only used to make your aquarium look good and that each type of lighting functions differently and is compatible to different aquarium sizes. So choose well.

Tropical Fish Tank Facts

Aquarium owners nowadays really like cichlids. This is because the fish is intelligent and there are even species that are splashing water in the event that they want attention. They are great fish to have around but there are some facts that you do need to know about them when choosing tanks. Let us now talk about some cichlid fish tanks facts which are important.

Even in the event that you see that cichlids behave well in small aquariums you still need to properly think about purchasing bigger ones. Large aquariums do make it easier for you to provide proper maintenance and care for fish. Cichlids are aggressive fish and if the aquarium is smaller they will not like that at all. Also, if you put in more pairs then they also look better. The interaction between fish is quite attractive.

Remember that different cichlid species come with different needs. In the beginning there is a need to take one cichlid fish tank that has enough space so that you can easily manage water conditions. African lake cichlids should never be chosen as the difficulty of raising them is high.

In order to grow cichlid fish in aquariums you should buy tanks of at least fifty gallons. Opt for the African species so that you can easily take care of them. Amazonian cichlids are more recommended for those people that have experience in raising fish due to the fact that they require more attention. You do need to have proper care for the tank.

As we are sure you do know by know one really important fact is to look at cichlid fish tank size. It needs to properly meet the space requirements that the fish has. Also, even if the tank is big you can not neglect proper maintenance. During mating season there is a need to be careful and offer fish one good diet. A tank is highly important.

What would be more docile and "Oscar tropical fish as you could get that could live in a small tank?

Only coz I thought I would ask for a small tank about 30 gallons, but with fish that can be tamed, doing things such as consumption of food from your hand or to admit that when I see you. Preferably something that lives on his own, but does not bother me. Ideally, it would have an Oscar, but the tanks are too expensive ... Thanks

The convicts are fish that I recommend. I have a male and a female in a 4 foot tank with 2 Oscars and a catfish. They are very bad they pursue and bite catfish and Oscar de la Liga occasion. It's pretty funny Watching 2 small a fish caught a 5 times larger than themselves.

Setting Up A Tropical Fish Tank

A fish tank aquarium can bring beauty and splendor of tropical fish or fresh water in your home or office, and if you follow aquarium its principles when setting up your tank you will provide years of enjoyment.

Planning your aquarium

A visit to your local pet store or breeder fish specialist will help you decide what type of fish you would like to have in your new tank fish aquarium. The store personnel will also help you decide on the proper size tank for the space and provide all equipment and the necessary accessories you'll need.

However, do not buy fish, yet! You must establish your tank before putting a fish in it.

The first step is to clean the tank. Do not skip this important step, just because the glass of the aquarium seems clean. Use a mild detergent in warm water to scrub the tank. Rinse the tank thoroughly to remove all traces of debris and detergent. Emptying the tank cleaned several times with fresh water to ensure there are no traces of detergent left behind.

Also clean all the equipment to be used in your new tank of aquarium fish and rinse thoroughly. Even a small amount of detergent leftovers can kill fish does not skimp on the rinsing process. Gravel should be rinsed in tap water until the water is clear. Plants can be stored in a bucket of clean water while you set up your aquarium.

Even a small aquarium fish is heavy - one gallons Water weighs about 10 pounds - so your new tank will need a solid support. He spent aquarium is available that will provide a solid basis, even if a tank of small fish may sit on another piece of furniture. Use a layer of polystyrene tiles between the tank and support all the same bumps.

When you set up your aquarium try to avoid placing it in direct sunlight, causing algae to grow in the tank. Remember that you will need to be located near a power take as many pieces of equipment tanks require a power source.

Now you can fill your tank and check for leaks. Allow the water for several hours and confirm that the container does not leak and drain the tank.

If you plan to use a sub-gravel filter, place it in the first tank following the instructions provided, then add the gravel pile a little higher towards the bottom of the aquarium to give the impression of distance within the tank.

Half fill the tank with water. Ideally, use dechlorinated water, or add chlorine Remover in the recommended dose. Place a dish in the tank above the gravel and pour water gently over the dish. This will create minimum disturbance to the gravel.

Then, install the filter and heater if you use one. For a fish tank freshwater aquarium inside heater is rarely necessary. Fish Tropical saltwater generally require a heater to maintain the required temperature. If you use a heater you will also need to install a thermometer in an easy to read location.

Now you can add decorations to your aquarium. This could include a photo of the band, rocks or ornaments on the base of the tank. Create many hiding places with the use of stones and other decorations. Your fish will be happy to have a place to hide from time to time. You can also install plants that need to be buried in gravel yet. Floating plants can be added when the tank is full.

Turn the filter and heater and ensure that they work before filling the aquarium to start with dechlorinated water. This will start the process of tank cycling is the process of elimination of excess ammonia from the tank.

Ammonia can be a problem when creating a new reservoir of the bacterium which breaks down the ammonia is not present. For several months the beneficial bacteria (Nitrosomonas) will develop in the tank. The bacteria breaks down the toxic ammonia to nitrite. Because of the time it takes for beneficial bacteria to grow in the tank It is recommended not to introduce fish for at least two weeks after setting up your tank.

When you're ready to add fish to your new tank try adding a few at a time. You'll take home from the store in a plastic bag filled with water. Float the bag, still sealed, on top of the tank until the water temperature in the bag is the water temperature tank. This may take several hours. Do not rush. When the water temperatures are the same, you can undo the bag carefully. Leave the fish swim out of the bag by themselves before removing the bag.

Watch your fish for several days or even weeks to ensure they are healthy before adding more fish. Take your time to prepare your fish population and you give the biology of the time shell to adapt to new fish and the waste they produce.

Always buy your fish from a reputable dealer to avoid the likelihood of introducing diseased fish in a tank. Never add plants or wild fish from a tank fish - the micro-organisms and bacteria attached to fish in the wild can be deadly to fish in an aquarium!

Establishing and maintaining a reservoir fish aquarium requires a commitment of time and money, but will reward the dedicated aquarist with years of enjoyment.

Automatic Aquarium Fish

Automatic fish feeder for an AquaStart 320 tank?

Hi,

I have a small aquarium (29litres/ ~6UK Gallons). It's one of those AquaStart 320 starter aquariums. I am looking for an automatic fish feeder to fit / will work with one of these tanks as I am going away for a short while. Anyone know of a decent one?

Cheers in anticipation
Sam

How long are you going away?

If it is 1 week or less, then it is better that you don't feed them at all. All fishes will easily survive for 1 week without food. I've done it for up to 2 weeks without any problems.

If you really want to look into auto feeders, then you have to be careful. Most of the cheap ones are garbage. They are not accurate and since they stay near the tank, they collect moist and will simply not work as well. Eheim auto feeders are one of the few that actually works but not cheap.

Best solution is not feed them. If longer than a week or two, perhaps you can ask someone to feed them on your behalf. Just leave them the right portions and ask them to feed them just once per couple of days or even a week. They will not die of starvation.

The automatic fish feeder is probably one of the greatest inventions when it comes to fish care. This device is designed to release just the right amount of food at specific intervals automatically. While having a fish requires very little of your time, it's still better if you are assured that your fish are being fed on a schedule especially if you're going to take a vacation. No it's not a good idea to sprinkle 2 or 3 days worth of food in your tank so your fish can eat it sparingly. It will never work that way. The only time that you have to sprinkle food is when you actually want your fish to eat.

What's good about an automatic fish feeder is that it comes with an adjustable device that will enable you to control the amount of food being released. Some equipment can feed up to 8x a day and they come with a stir bar which prevents the food from clumping. You can set it to feed single portions 4x a day or make it double with 60 seconds interval so that your less aggressive fish can get their servings too. Most aquarium fish are omnivores or herbivores, they are used to eating small portions several times a day instead of having larger portions. Choose something that you can use for pellets, flakes or crumbled food. If you want something on the high-end side then you can go ahead and buy one. They are typically equipped with LCD display for ease in reading. I also found one that can feed your fish for up to 4 weeks. This device is equipped with 28 individual cells that will let you mix and match the food. It's also great for adding medications. It attaches conveniently to your tank's rim and the vent holes reduce condensation. It comes with a timer which allows you to feed exactly when you want to. Isn't that amazing?

An automatic fish feeder is actually a great investment and don't worry because it won't have to break your bank account. They are pretty affordable for their function and use. Be very careful when you're looking at buying a $20 automatic feeder because sometimes it will allow moisture to get into the device which will clump the food together instead of keeping it in its original flake or pellet form. Visit some online forums or blogs to see which brands fish owners actually recommend.

Would this light be suitable for a 2.5-5 gallon?

Hi everyone i was just wondering if any of you have ever tried these Jebo clip on lights. I found one on ebay and was wondering if it is efficient enough to help plants grow in a 2.5-5 gallon tank. Would any of u happen to know if it's a flourescent? Thanks. heres the link

Looks good, you may be able to find it cheaper or the same price in a local shop though. That way if there is a problem a little while down the line you can take it back to the shop and get a replacement straightaway.

I take it you having an open top tank, be careful many fish can jump out of them. You don't want to wake one morning to find your fish has jumped out and has been lying on the carpet all night.
If you get some floating plants, frogbit or duckweed, it will help your fish feel more secure and less likely to make a jump for it.

Aquarium Reptile Snake

I am thinking of getting a reptile of some sort. What would I need?

I have a 55 gallon tank (200L). I have a small aquarium filter and a florescent light. What else would I need and how much would it cost me? I could I put in it? I was thinking of having 1/4 of it filled with water and having a ramp up on it, what could I keep in it. Desert reptile idea welcomed also. Oh and no snakes.
P.S I also have play sand, would this work?

Find The Best Wildlife In Sydney Australia

A visit to Australia is simply not complete until one has at least spied a koala a single time. But for visitors heading to busier city areas like Sydney, a trek into the wilderness to explore nature sometimes just isnt in the cards. Thankfully, in addition to being the home to a number of different cultural attractions one expects to find in a big city, Sydney is also the home to some of the finest zoos and animal sanctuaries in the world. With most of them offering up special habitats dedicated only to the animals of Australia, everything from scary snakes to cuddly koalas can be seen--from a safe distance, of course.

For the natives of Australias lakes, rivers, and seas, nothing beats a trip to the Sydney Aquarium, located right on the picturesque Darling Harbor, site of a great deal of the citys current gentrification. Whether nature lovers are interested in finding out more about the habitats under the sea or simply getting to walk through a tunnel surrounded by sharks swimming, the Sydney Aquarium is an exciting stop for aquatic adventures. It is also one of the only places in the world that youre going to get to see a platypus swim, so making the time to go explore the exciting underwater world of the Sydney Aquarium is definitely a must.

For something known for inspiring a mix of fear and awe only on land, the Australian Reptile Park is a hugely popular stop. Located outside of Sydney in Somersby, this is not just a spot where visitors can see one of the largest collections of Australian reptiles, from turtles to snakes. It is also a crucial spot for health and safety purposes, being one of the only creators and suppliers of anti-venom. The reptile park estimates that its crucial doses of anti-venom have saved tens of thousands of lives, so just having the chance to learn more about how it is harvested and created is worth the trip alone!

For a Sydney accommodation that houses the widest variety of different creatures, look no further than Taronga Zoo, which boasts eight different diverse climate zones and thousands of different animals, including some that you cant see anywhere else. Australia-specific regions include those devoted to the wildlife in the sea, in the rainforest, and out in the outback. Expect to see kangaroos, wallabies, platypuses, and one of the largest koala habitats in the entire country. A huge hit with children and adults alike, Taronga Zoo is one of the most visited zoos in the entire world, and a major tourist attraction for anyone with an affinity for nature and wildlife.

In the same category, a major contender is now on the scene for those interested in exploring the wildlife of Australia. Wildlife World, which is being incorporated into the space at the Sydney Aquarium, also enjoys a beautiful harbor-front location and some excellent funding. The entire space is inside and air-conditioned, a first for a zoo and animal habitat. Divided into different sections depending on regions in Australia and the rest of the world, Wildlife World is famous for its snake walk, where visitors can walk down a kilometer-long stretch of encased habitats for a truly astonishing amount of different types of snakes.

Shrimp Aquarium
Is it ok to put a ghost shrimp, aquarium frog,or snail in a tank with A BETTA? Is it safe for both creatures?

I hear that the bettas will eat ghost shrimp but how will the fish react with a small aquarium tank frog or a snail? My betta "Albus" is very tempramental and lives in a one gallon aquarium. I need to know before I test his pride and limits before I end up killing the poor thing. Please help me!!!!!

in general, you won't want to mix any bullet-shaped fish, especially those with fancy fins, with a male betta. if your fish seems very aggressive (like flares when you put your hand near the tank, or flares at a plant or something) you probably shouldn't mix the betta with any other animal.

if your betta is fairly lazy, as many are, there shouldn't be a problem introducing a snail (they have their own protection, too), or a frog such as an african diving frog. consider the size of the ghost shrimp relative to the betta... could he perceive it as food? i don't think he'd be territorial with a shrimp but he might try to eat it.

i don't think the other animals would attack your betta though.

Therm Deluxe
what is the best 40 gallon tank for turtles?

I have 2 Red Ear Slider turtles that is about 3 years old each. I need to get a new home for them. I'm thinking about a 40-50 gallon tank but i don't know which one to get. Any recommendations and suggestions? that would be great. Also, which heater, filter, and uvb lamp should i get?

So far I am thinking about a 40 gallon tank, visi-therm deluxe 150 watt heater, a good filter, and a reptisum 10.0 uvb lamp.

thank you for your asnwers!!!

If you can get an even bigger aquarium than a 40-50 gallon, that would be even better. RES can get huge!

I've always heard not to buy anything cheaper than an All Glass brand aquarium and you'll be fine. I use this basking light for my turtles. I researched and researched and decided it was the best...

http://www.reptileuv.com/

You'll want a canister filter rated for three times the space as your tank since turtles are extra messy.

I love the visitherm heaters!

I got a relatively cheap screen top custom made by the guys at glass cages as the ones I found in pet stores were always for small aquariums...

http://glasscages.com/

Congrats on upgrading your turts! You will love seeing how happy them seem when you move them to their new, bigger home. I started out with my hatchlings in a 20 gallon. (texas map and southern painted) They got soooo much more active when they moved to their 120 gallon and they're so much more fun to watch.

Aquarium Coral

I have some old coral and sea shells from a display. How can I clean them for safe aquarium use?

I found some old star fish, coral (I know this is going to be hellish to try to scrub algae off lol) and sea shells in a display. They are a bit dusty, but other wise appear fine. I was considering soaking them in salt water. I have a 55 gallon fresh water tank.

There are a few ways to clean them. One is to soak them in a bleach and water solution or a Hydgeron Peroxide solution and water. Let them sit a few hours and soak, scrub then rinse in water using your dechlor. The old algae will come off easily

Although you can put corals into a fresh water tank, this will increase the PH drastically so be careful.

I would recomend you not putting the old star fish into the tank since once it is wet it will begin to rot then fall apart.

Raising Coral In Saltwater Aquariums - Great Tips And Advice

Many people are very passionate about making their home aquarium look like a piece of the ocean that has been transplanted in their homes. Some people will take pains in cultivating their aquarium themselves while some will just like to go out and buy their whole kit, tank, filter, lighting plants fish and all. This may be an easier way to create a good aquarium, however, the fun way is to start with the basics and grow your own fish and plants.

Some people are pretty good at breeding their own fish and have formed groups where they can exchange their home grown aquarium plants, fish and coral as well. There is a certain joy in seeing your efforts take definate shape in the form of aquetic plants and marine life.

Attempting to start a reef in your aquarium is not the sort of advice gurus will dole out to beginers in this hobby. One is advised to start with a small aquarium that houses fish only. Once you have a few months of experience in caring for the fish in the aquarium you can move on to trying your hand at breeding fish, then plants in the aquarium. After about a year you will be rady to try your hand at growing coral in the tank.

Before you rush out to get yourself some coral reef for the tank, remember that you are not just placing a piece of rock to your aquarium. These are actually called Polyps and are tiny invertibrate living organisms. The existance of these polyps in your saltwater tank depends on your ability to provide proper lighting, food and salt water.

In order for the coral reef to survive you must provide good saltwater to the tank at regular intervals. If you change the water abruptly you are likely to send your polyps into a state of shock and ultimately lose them. You will know the coral is in trouble by the discoloring of the reef. In addition you must be able to provide a proper pump to produce a strong current in the water as this is very important for the coral's survival.

You must never forget that corals are living organisms and require food. Many people of the wrong belief that corals feed like other plants in the water, on photosynthesis. Nothing could be further from the truth. Corals need to be fed, like the other fish in the aquarium, at least 3 times a week. Frozen food is best for coral reef in the tank. Any coral food purchased from the pet store that has been open for more than 5 months must be discarded. Liquid or bottled food is available from the pet store and is best suited for the coral as they do not dirty the aquarium.

Believe it or not large polyps feed on pieces of minced meat! What do you know - from plants to carnivores! However, remember if the polyps are too small they will starve because the large pieces og minced meat will not be of any use to them. So stick to the prepared food from the pet store.

If you have done your research and have a good supply of nutrients from the store you will have your coral reef in your living room in no time at all.
