There's actually 2 things to consider with Saltwater. Filtration and water circulation. Saltwater must be kept moving at all times.

Rule of thumb for fish only is 10+ times water circulation per hour. So you need minimum 500gall / hour pump system.

You can of course split this turnover between a filter and internal powerhead/s. You cant really ever have too much filtration or circulation.

Why no cannister filter? I have had reef tanks with sumps/skimmers for many years and, like many of my associates, I have reverted to a closed filtration system (cannister). In-tank filters not good enough and hang-ons are plain ugly. Get a good cannister - no salt creep or noise.

Protein skimmer - you don't need one for fish. That film/scum that develops on top of the saltwater tanks and smells like fat is not protein at all, its bacteria that feeds on free (dormant) protein strands. It is not harmful to fish at all.

Get an internal powerhead and aim it at the water surface so its well agitated. This breaks up any dormant gunk & the bacteria starves anyway (not the good bacteria).

So what happens to all the un-skimmed protein & other undesirables? Simple answer: one purigen sachet in your filter/cannister will remove anything a skimmer can - and much more.

Hey, does anyone have any of these protein skimmers or know if they work well????

I had SeaClone 150. This skimmer is a pieces of junk and did not work even after modifying it.

I have read the reviews on Visi Jet on various aquarium forums. Just another cheap piece of junk.

I cannot comment on the first skimmer since I have never seen it in action. From the looks of it, it is similar to the SeaClone.

If these were the only option, I would buy the Jebo. This skimmer is better than the SeaClone or the Visi Jet.

Look into the octopus line if you want a good skimmer. They have hob that are great. If you decide on Octo, get the biggest one in that line. Good luck.

good, relaible, in-tank protein skimmer???..?

can anyone recommend a good in-tank protein skimmer that will do the job and is not too expensive (in the excess of $80)....thanks!!!!

There are no GOOD skimmers in your price range, Step up a bit and get the good stuff (Like the AquaC brand), your fish are worth it, and if you prevent 2 or 3 fish from dying, it would pay for itself in no time.
I've used the cheap skimmers in the past, and when I upgraded to a better one, in the same tank, I couldn't believe the difference.... On the old one, I was cleaning the collection cup weekly, and with a better one I was cleaning it DAILY!
The AquaC Remora is one of the BEST ones for it's price, check the marine/ reef website forums or Craiglist, you might get a deal on a used one.
