How To Get Live Coral Zoanthid Polyps To Open?

Hi,
I ordered some purple hornet zoanthids online, and when they arrived they were kinda in shock. I was told that an iodine dip might work. Anybody have any solutions?
I dripped them with the lights off in my room, and with my tank lights off.

How did you acclimate the new coral in the new tank? because the Zoo's were in complete darkness for a long time during shipping. if the lights in your tank were on you might have shocked the coral. you have to open the container slowly, and slowly introduce the natural light (sun, lights in the room that might be on.) Tank lights should be off once sufficient time has elapsed so you can acclimate the coral properly.

Which place is better to live: Fort Myers or Cape Coral, Florida?

My family is moving to Florida in April. We were going to live in South Fort Myers, but it looks cheaper to live in Cape Coral. I want a nice, safe place for my kids to live and play. I also want to be as close to the beach as possible. It looks like the Cape is only 25-30 minutes to the beach. What do you think?

i'm a teenager & i've lived down here all my life. if you want to know what's safer, then you definitely want fort myers. cape coral actually has more old people than ft. myers! also, cape's beaches are the worst beaches in southwest florida. people who live in cape coral go to ft. myers for the beach! fort myers is way closer to the beach! you can go to ft. myers beach for example, or sanibel. there IS a reason why it's cheaper to live in cape coral...it's a rough town.
i'm not saying there aren't rough parts in ft. myers either, but a lot of my friends live in the cape and they hate it. high crime. and it's not closer to miami at all?? miami is on the EAST coast. don't listen to all these tourists

Nano Frag Tank Ideas?

I am getting a OceanFree 1.5 or 2 gallon nano frag tank that includes an oceanfree filter and light. I will be making a tiny overflow for it into a small refugium. Then using tubing as a return using its syphon. It may not work but who cares. Ill just get a tiny pump. I have 1.5 pounds live rock and rubble for it from a large tank. I have sand Also. I will top off with RODI water. QUESTION!!!!!

It all depends upon what type of frags you're looking to keep in that tiny pico tank (no way is the tank big enough to be considered a nano tank).

If you are ok with softies and MAYBE a small LPS then it is possible. Don't forget a heater, you really should use a skimmer and a media reactor for carbon. Softies are notoriously toxic, so the carbon would help to keep the toxins under control.

Frequent water changes are a must. ONE very tiny goby, a small cleaner shrimp, a nassarius snail, an astraea snail and time could make your pico tank a success. It's very very important to allow your pico to cycle and mature for 5-6 weeks before adding any critters to the tank.

For many successful reef hobbyists there will come a time when the corals have adapted well and exhibit good growth. This eventually leads to overcrowding and coral trimming well, becomes necessary. This is a great chance to recoup the costs of a reef aquarium and promote aquacultured corals in the reef aquarium hobby. This hobby often impacts our precious ocean resources and efforts to minimize negative impacts and are always beneficial.

A frag tank has a few qualities that differ from a typical reef aquarium. First, a frag tank system should have very minimal rock work in the main tank. Live rock is still necessary for filtration but should be stored in the sump or refugium. The idea is to maximize the space for coral frags. This also allows for efficient flow since large objects often obstruct flow.

A frag system should be shallow as possible to maximize the efficiency of lights and pumps. A good height range for a frag tank ranges from 8 to 12 inches. Frag tanks that are dedicated to strictly SPS corals may even get away with six inches. If the frag tank will house a mixture of coral frags with different lighting requirements then it's best to go with 12 inches.

It's important to have high, medium to low light zones in a frag tank. This is very important since it's very easy to overpower a shallow tank. A coral frag that was trimmed from a low light area in an aquarium that is suddenly exposed to 250 watts under a few inches of water can mean disaster. A sudden increase in intensity can quickly bleach out a coral.

High flow is very important in a frag tank because newly trimmed frags will require high flow to prevent infection. Furthermore, frag tanks are usually fed heavily to increase growth rates. For this reason good flow will help minimize settling detritus. Like a display aquarium, it is important that the water flow is random and multidirectional. Finally, a space should be set up in the frag system with an area of zero flow. Many live corals such as Xenia or Mushrooms will require time to attach to objects after being cut. These corals will need an area with nearly no flow for them to attach. A great place for this is the refugium or sump.

A frag tank doesn't always require a complex and expensive equipment. Nano frag tanks are extremely popular and can set up quite easily. With enough effort and time it's possible to recover the frag tank investment. Growing out coral frags is a rewarding experience and a great way to save our reefs.

Is this tank big enough for Live Coral and fish?

Is a 24 gallon tank big enuff to have live coral and fish the dimenson are 14.5in Long 14.5 Wide 27in High?
Also does any one no a website were i can go to get details on makeing salt water tank. I need instruction on everything from the tank to the set up?

I've seen reef tanks as small as 8 gallons. You have to put things in there that fit properly.

They are also very colorful and many people love the movement they add to the their tanks. Although they are relatively hardy this type the live coral in this group require a wide range of lighting and water flow so the right advice from a reputable coral dealer should be sought out before purchasing this type of animal.
