For saltwater, you want actinic 10000K or 50/50; more focused on blue.

For freshwater, you probably want full-spectrum 5000K to 6500K, closer to daylight (white), but particularly with red and blue.

You don't need to spend a lot of money on lighting in a freshwater tank unless you want to grow plants. So if you are not growing plants, just get a cheaper dual T8 tube hood, instead of a power-compact hood (those things are expensive to replace). T5 is great but more expensive than T8. Do NOT get a single-tube hood as those are too dim for anything.

i can't twist in a new light bulb into my lamp as the socket seems to be very tight?

i have an expensive lamp that has a socket for a standard light bulb. the first time i changed the bulb i noticed that this was a very tight fit. the bulb has blown again and i managed to remove the old bulb. i am having trouble twisting in a new bulb. does anyone manufacture slightly narrower bulbs? or does anyone have any ideas on how to screw in a new standard bulb?

I am not insulting your intelligence, but I have to ask : When you removed the defective lamp (bulb) did the brass or silver colored base come out with the burned out lamp? That is, did the burned out lamp come out in one piece or was the screw in metal base left in the lamp fixture? Or even just part of it? O.K. that out of the way, check the socket that you are trying to screw the lamp into and see that it is not deformed or warped and that nothing remains in it that does not belong there. Have you tried installing more than one lamp thereby eliminating the possibility that the lamp you are trying to install has a warped or malformed base? If the female socket is deformed or of poor manufacture, installing a new one is a DIY project if you are handy. No such thing as a narrow lamp. They are standardized.

Obviously, you'll need a bulb that fits the socekt-- if it is an incandescent socket, you'll need either an incandescent bulb or a swirly fluorescent bulb. If it's a standard fluorescent tube socket, you'll need a standard fluorescent tube. Getting fancy, the spectrum will not matter unless you are trying to grow photosynthetic organisms (plants, corals, certain saltwater invertebrates). For freshwater plants, a spectrum between 5,500 and 6,700K is ideal. Corals and inverts generally need between 10,000 and 20,000K, and the lower the Kelvin temperature, the more need for additional actinic lighting.

Will an Aqua-Glo Light bulb of the wattage required harm my goldfish?

I bought a light bulb not knowing it was and aqua-gla light bulb... for tetra's for my black moor goldfish. The wattage is what is specified for the tank and i was just wondering if my goldfish can live and will be fine under that light source.

60 lights--wow, you're going to have a megalight bill unless you make most of them compact fluorescents (CFL). CFLs cost more to start with, but they last 7 times longer and use 1/4 of the electricity. They are available in spirals, globes, spotlights, dimmables, and 3-way now. A company called EFI has some good CFL bulb choices.

Here's some general guidelines: for bedside lamps, about 60W regular, or 13-15W CFL. For reading lamps, 75W-100W, or 20W CFL. For bright lighting in areas like the kitchen, you may want 100W regular or 20W-25W CFL.

But more important than Watts is lumens. Lumens tell you how much illumination you will get (how bright the light will be), but Watts is a measure of how much energy you will burn to get the light. In general, you'll get a better deal if you try to get the most lumens for the amount of Watts (sort of like miles per gallon in a car). You'll see that CFLs are much more efficient when you're trying to get a lot of light for a little money. When you're shopping for bulbs, if you want a lot of light, choose a bulb with high lumens, and when choosing between bulbs with equal lumens, get the one that uses the fewest watts for that number of lumens. Again, the purchase cost for a bulb that optimizes lumens per Watt may be more expensive, but over the lifetime of the bulb, you will more than get your money back with savings on electricity.

If you are going to use some bulbs outside, and you are considering CFLs, you will also need to check the temperature ratings for the bulbs. Some CFL bulbs can handle low temperatures, but others don't perform well when it's cold until they warm up for a few minutes.

The different sources would create light in different wavelengths, and not always in those used by a plant for photosynthesis. So the "quality" of the light would affect plant growth. But maybe not in the way you'd expect, either. When plants are grown in a high-quality of light, their growth would be more compact. In dimmer, or lower quality light, the growth can actually be longer, but more "spindly", with weak stems. So in doing this experiment at home, you'd have to figure out exactly how you're going to evaluate the plant growth, because "taller" doesn't necessarily equate to "better lighting".

The blacklight bulbs sold in stores aren't true UV bulbs, they're just in the deep blue range. A true UV (such as the germicidal UVC) would be more dangerous to use, because exposure to the eyes or skin can cause mutations of cells - that's how they are used to kill bacteria. So the blacklight would be safer. If you're looking for other options, look into UVB bulbs sold for reptiles. These should be a good light source for plants.
