Where can I find endcaps for a saltwater power compact light fixture, without buying the ballasts?

www.hellolights.com, its an awesome site with all kinds of DIY parts and pieces and complete kits....definately have waterproof endcaps for cf lights straight and square pins, they have both waterproof and regular, i think the waterproof ones are around 30 bucks i dont remember the regular ones, i just ordered a cf ballast kit from them last night

Lighting is a necessary element to the acrylic aquarium, both to mimic light as it would appear in a natural environment and for viewers to see the elements of the aquarium.

Acrylic aquarium lighting also adds brilliance to the display.

Natural daylight from the sun is required to support the animal and plant life in the aquarium. Placement of the aquarium is a factor in the amount of sunlight the aquarium will receive.

Incandescent bulbs

Smaller aquariums can use incandescent bulbs, but a great deal of heat is emitted from them and thus fluorescents are much preferred.

Standard fluorescent bulbs

Aquarium lighting systems have typically been fluorescent bulbs because they emit less heat and use less energy.

Power compacts

An efficient way of lighting your acrylic aquarium is with power compact lights. This light source is more intense than traditional fluorescent bulbs. They don't heat up as much and save on energy.

Metal halide

Metal halide bulbs have been popular as well. Created in the 1960s, these lights are popular for their high intensity light source. These bulbs are more powerful than traditional fluorescents and glow in a wide arc.

The newest rage in acrylic aquarium lighting is the Solaris LED system which replaces metal halide and fluorescent bulbs. These lights burn for 50,000 hours, reducing replacement intervals to nearly six years. LED lights heat up and out of the tank so the water temperature is not disturbed. A chiller is not needed and less strain is placed on the air conditioning system in the space. Built-in microprocessors allow the lights to be automatically set for color differentiations at various times of the day.

Consideration also must be given to the color of the light. Known as "Kelvin," the amount of Kelvin intensity produces different lighting colors in the aquarium.

Lighting varies for freshwater life versus saltwater life.

Light timers can be installed to automate the amount of lighting provide in the aquarium.

Can a CFL light bulb be a electronic bulb, or is it a electrical bulb, and why?

CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lamp, and some people feel that as it has a circuit, it is a electronic device

Wanted to know if anyony is selling a 48" power compact lighting system or knows someone who is.?

I just bought a 55 gallon aquarium and want to set it up for soft corals.

Wal-mart and petsmart are not going to have a lighting system good enough for corals. I don't think they even sell power compact lights at all. I've had good experiences with bigalsonline.com and hellolights.com. Both are resonably priced and have good service. I'm particularly fond of the coralife units.

Will LED lights supplant compact fluorescents in home lighting applications?

In flashlights they make an incredible amount of light per battery, are very bright, and last about forever.

Are they being adapted to use as household lighting? If so, when will they become widely available?

Are they more efficient than and less polluting (mercury, manufacturing waste etc?) than CF's?

At 100 W incandescent bulb puts out 1700 lumens and costs less than a dollar. Compact fluorescent generate similar lighting with less power and cost about $3. A very bright LED ie Luxeon Star gives 60 lumens for $6 and can heat by 80C in ten minutes without proper cooling. As LED's get hot, they draw more current and produce less light. High power LED's require a current regulator, a heat sink and possibly a fan. A properly cooled LED will last 100,000 hours, but the lifetime of a hot LED is no better than a CF bulb. LED clusters designed for home lighting are currently available, but not widely used due to cost. Until costs come down, LED's are likely to serve niche markets rather than general household lighting.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs or CFL for short will soon be a daily fact we have to live with, whether we are enthusiastic or not. Many of you may already be using them in your homes.

These bulbs are being greeted with a variety of reactions. I have to admit, that I was not initially enthused, but I have found that they are getting better, and I do use them in many areas around my home with a mind to saving energy and saving myself money when the light bill arrives each month.

The move is on to convert to these bulbs exclusively in the US within the next two to four years depending on whose interpretation of regulations you chose to embrace. Indeed the sale of incandescent bulbs has already been banned in Australia and some European countries, and retailers may sell their existing stock, but purchase no more. Needless to say, they are having no trouble selling them.

Since this is our future, I am reviewing some facts and tips about the CFL to help you ease into their usage with as little pain as possible.

1. While it is true that the initial cost of compact fluorescent light bulbs is greater, they do last much longer. The Energy Star label warrants them for two year usage, and they may last as long as five years.

In order to extend the lifespan of a CFL it is suggested that they not be turned on and off quickly. In other words, once you turn the bulb on, let it remain on a minimum of fifteen minutes before turning it off.

They are estimated to use 75 percent less energy than their incandescent counterpart. It is estimated that an Energy Star rated CFL will pay for itself in six months.

So, the good news is, though the initial cost is greater they will give longer service and lower your energy bill.

2. Initial scares about the mercury contained in a CFL seem, in fact, to have little basis. Yes they do contain mercury. Most households with children have experienced the mishap of a broken fever thermometer and survived. These bulbs contain about one percent as much mercury as a thermometer.

The daily news seems to want to put a scare in us about one health issue or another. Obviously news stories about the latest health hazard sell.

And if you do a little research, you will find that incandescent bulbs are not off the hook on the mercury issue. The news didn't bother to include this little fact.

3. Fluorescent lighting can be unkind visually, but bulbs are available with lower Kelvin temperatures that cast warmer tones much like what we are accustomed to with incandescent lighting. Look for bulbs with ranges between 2700 and 3000.

Kelvin is a temperature scale by which light color is rated. Lower ratings provide warmer color and higher cast blues and white light.

4. If you favor dimmers, you will need to look for CFL's made to work with a dimmer. These bulbs will dim down to between 10-20% of initial output.

Three-way bulbs are available also. Consult packaging to be sure you are getting a bulb with this capacity.

While industry is diligently working to increase the efficiency of incandescent bulbs to meet the Energy Bill standards in the next two to four years, it seems inevitable that compact fluorescent light bulbs are here to stay.

Can you buy compact flourescent lights for ceiling can lighting.?

I have can ceiling lights with flood lights. Does anyone make compact flourescent flood lights for can lighting.

Osram, Nelson, and Sylvania (and others) do reflector and par38 globes in compact fluorescent. You should be able to pick them up from your local lighting store, or at least order them in.
In relation to color, there are various degrees (color temperature measured in Kelvins) compact fluoros are available in, most commonly being- 2700K warm white- closest to incandescent, 4000K cool white, and 5000K daylight- closest to natural daylight. The daylight color tends to be a little blue, so I recommend cool white for a clean crisp white light.

is a dual compact light with lunar light good for a 29 gallong reef tank?

I'm planning on buying bubble coral, yellow polyps, green polyp leather, clove polyps, mushrooms and pulsing xenia...as far as location in the tank, iam already aware of where to place them...I am just wondering if a dual compact light with lunar light is good for the kinds corals i want to have?

For the corals you want to keep no. I'm guessing you are talking about having 2 40ishw power compacts for lighting. You could get away with the mushrooms and xenias but the others will need some more light. T-5 lights are a cheap alternative to metal halide. The corals you want don't really need the intensity of a metal halide light.

glass canopy for my reef tank or not?

ok im am buying new lights for my reef tank and the website is confusing me so much. i am looking to buy Coralife Aqualight Quad Tube Compact Fluorescent Strip Lights 96 watts at drs foster and smith.com. initially i want to get those lights and get the mounting legs for them and not glass canopy but the site says that i need to have the tank covered. but i seen tanks with good lights without glass covers. so i was wondering if the website is trying to say you need to have a glass cover if your not getting the mounting legs. but if i get the mounting legs i dont need a glass cover. im so confused if you cant tell. for people with reef tanks do you have a glass cover for your tank?

I don't have my saltwater no more but its advisable that you get a glass top because if you plan on putting fish in there they may jump out and the fish are costly so you really don't want that happening but you can do it without because my lfs has theirs like that but be sure you have the cover that goes under the light
