can a freshwater aquarium be left unattended for a month with an automatic feeder, heater and timed lighting?
im a college student and wanted to get a fish tank. I'm just thinking what will happen to it during christmas break
also, im also concerned with the danger of it. Electrical surges, shortages...
A month should not be a problem, some people actually go a month between water changes on a regular basis, and while this is something I would never recommend, I'm saying it won't kill our fish.
If you do like one previous user suggested, set the feed erto feed ever 2 or 3 days to keep feeding light, and make sure there is a good amount of food set so that the tank doesn't get flooded with food, you should be fine.
Of course there is no guarantees. Equipment 'should' keep working fine and the tank 'should' remain healthy, but if something does happen you just have to face the facts that nobody is around to catch it.
When you get back you can do partial water changes to get things back into shape.
Also, if you have no live plants, set the lighting to just 5 or 6 hours per day to help prevent too much algae build up while you are gone.
PS - all your equipment should be running through a power bar with a surge protector anyway
