What equipment would I need to start up a 55gallon saltwater reef tank?

I have a 55gallon aquarium and wanted to start a SW tank up. What type of lighting, filter, heater, protein skimmer....etc..
I would really like to try setting up a reef as well.

I always notice how people just copy and paste info..
I started mine 5 months ago and so for its doing great... This is what i recommend to have..

Common Liquids if preparing your own salt mix:
Amquel and Conditioner

Kent Products:
Calcium
Micro-Vert
Iodiine
Phytoplex
Coral- Accel
Trace Elements

Testing kit:
Hydrometer, PH, Ammonia, Nitrate, Phosphate

Salt:
either buckets from the store (salt already made) ----- what i use..
or instant Ocean-- directions on bag

lighting:
minimum a t-5 dual compact flourescent.. or 400 Watt Metal Halide bulb ( Best for Reef systems)

Heater: 20 watt heater

Chiller: Depending on where you live. If water gets too hot you would have to bring the temperature down. I live in California so that climate is average and i don't have one.

You will Definetly Need a:
PROTEIN SKIMMER

Water Filtration:
Either Sump or Filter Canister (Diatomite)

Water Circulation inside tank:
At least 3 powerhead. Corals need water movement to cath phytoplanton etc.

Substrate:
Live rock: FIji premium Live rock, mine was 4$/lb
i will say about 30lbs. For a reef setup try to get the flat ones you see i order to place your corals
Live sand: also recommended.

Cycle Your tank for about 3 months with the live rock and live sand.

After that add your corals and kent Chemicals to start coralline growth

Anyone have experiece with the jebo aquarium new r 375?

I just purchased a used jebo with a used Emperor 280 (bio wheel) filter. The store told me it is a 46 gal tank. I paid 112 including tax for everything including a very nice stand like I see in Petco for $200.00. The price also reflects a $25.00 credit for my 29 gal tank. Anyone experience these brands?

I have a Jebo canister filter and I am very happy with it for the price you can't beet it.

i have a 30x12x13 reef aquarium does anyone know how many gallon that is? And do i need a power head since i have a pretty big filter. It is for a 75 gallon tank and processed 350 gallon per hour. IT create a bit of a current near the top. Is it absolutely necessary to have one, will everything die if i dont?

can a freshwater aquarium be left unattended for a month with an automatic feeder, heater and timed lighting?

im a college student and wanted to get a fish tank. I'm just thinking what will happen to it during christmas break
also, im also concerned with the danger of it. Electrical surges, shortages...

A month should not be a problem, some people actually go a month between water changes on a regular basis, and while this is something I would never recommend, I'm saying it won't kill our fish.

If you do like one previous user suggested, set the feed erto feed ever 2 or 3 days to keep feeding light, and make sure there is a good amount of food set so that the tank doesn't get flooded with food, you should be fine.

Of course there is no guarantees. Equipment 'should' keep working fine and the tank 'should' remain healthy, but if something does happen you just have to face the facts that nobody is around to catch it.

When you get back you can do partial water changes to get things back into shape.

Also, if you have no live plants, set the lighting to just 5 or 6 hours per day to help prevent too much algae build up while you are gone.

PS - all your equipment should be running through a power bar with a surge protector anyway

How many goldfish should you have in a 30 litre aquarium tank? And how many of those tiny little ones?

The little ones are coldwater fish too, you always see them in the tanks with the goldfish, don't know the name.

A 30l tank is too small for even a single goldfish. A single fancy goldfish needs a minimum of 38l (~10 US gallons), and an additional 38l is necessary for each additional fancy goldfish. The single tail common, comet or shubunkin goldfish need about 190l per fish (these are actually more suitable for ponds). Goldfish produce massive amounts of waste and because of this, require very strong filters, frequent chemistry testing and frequent partial water changes.

Most likely, the small fish to which you refer are white cloud minnows or silversides. Only experienced goldfish hobbyists should keep these with goldfish in large tanks. The minnows are schooling fish and care must taken when keeping them with goldfish as goldfish may eat these fish.

Your 30l tank would accommodate a shoal of 6-8 white cloud minnows. It is too small, however, for even a single goldfish

Traditionally virtually all fish tank aquariums were made of glass but in the last couple of years the advances in plastic technology spurred a new wave of acrylic tanks on the market. A filled up fish tank can be heavy, especially when you get to 50 gallons or more. Glass tanks can weigh as much as 10 times more than an acrylic tank. Acrylic is a very advanced material which gives it a lot of strength for very little weight. A lighter tank aquarium means that you can support it on normal furniture (don't need a special stand) and if you have to move it you can.

3. Seamlessness

Glass tanks are made of sheets of glass joined together while acrylic can be molded into a single seamless shape. Not only does this give you greater clarity, but shat slick seamless look is very modern and looks really good.

3. Shape

Acrylic is easily molded and formed into almost any shape. Although glass can be curved it tends to distort the images behind it and you won't get that with acrylic. Acrylic tanks come in a great variety of shapes and sizes to suit virtually any space you have available. You don't need to be confined to the square or rectilinear glass tanks anymore.

4. Strength

Glass is very strong in compression, but because it is so hard it's very brittle. Acrylic is softer and can be twisted without breaking. Aquarium Tank Fish

I had a fish tank(aquarium) with 21 different fishes at the end of feb but today I have an empty tank?

I had a bed filter pump which worked night and day but I have no clue as to how the fishes perished one by one, any help to restart and caretaking

Well I assume you are a beginner and put too many fish in your tank. If there are too many fish in a tank, they can die from ammonia poisoning and stress. You need to completely clean your tank and all of its ornaments, plants, etc. Remember the 1 gallon inch rule for fish, and try to go easy on the fish for your tank next time. Add fish week after week because too many at once will upset the tanks balance. Do regular tank cleans, and you should be fine! Good Luck!

As a beginner first learning the ins and outs of keeping an aquarium healthy, things can get a bit overwhelming. There is so much terminology and equipment, it is enough to make anyone's head spin. Commonly available, and quite pretty when healthy, the goldfish is one of the easier fish to keep healthy and happy. Be prepared to do some reading, however. There are terms and procedures to become familiar with.

The aquarium is absolutely critical to being able to keep healthy fish, no matter what kind of fish it is. Proper care and maintenance of your aquarium is necessary, and there are daily and weekly procedures that must be followed. The first step in keeping a goldfish is choosing the aquarium. While you may see goldfish in bowls and other small containers on television and even in real life, this is really a bad idea. While a goldfish can live for a while in a small bowl like that, they will never really thrive, and will be more susceptible to disease and death. A 10 gallon minimum aquarium with filtration should be the minimum you consider for keeping a goldfish. The filter running into the aquarium agitates the surface of the water and provides more oxygen to the water, which in turn means the fish has plenty of oxygen and is healthier. More room to swim, and even some currents from the filtration, make sure that the goldfish stays happy and in shape. Don't forget to take the number of goldfish into account! More than one goldfish will require more space.

Ask the guys at your local pet store or aquarium shop (recommended) what they recommend. Don't buy too much tank at first though. Try to keep it small and simple. Tell them how many fish you intend to keep, and whether you would like to add fish later. Always do some research before buying a product you are not familiar with. There are a ton of accessories and products associated with aquariums and fish. Doing some research beforehand can keep you from buying products you don't need.

Unless you have access to well water, your tap water probably contains chlorine or ammonia. These substances are very harmful to your goldfish, and can even kill them if you have particularly chlorinated water. There are products available that you simply mix thoroughly into your tap water after filling the aquarium. They usually remove chlorine as well as adding things to the water to help your fish form its slime coat and fight off ick (a small parasite that is extremely common on fish that are stressed). If you would rather use distilled or reverse osmosis purified water, there are other additives that restore needed minerals into these too-pure waters.

Make sure you check the filters once a week, and rinse them out with dechlorinated water of some type. It is okay to use distilled water for this. It is common to get snails living on your filters. Try not to crush them, and remove them during your weekly cleaning. It is not recommended that you put these types of snails back into your aquarium, because they tend to over-breed and eat every bit of plant matter in your aquarium.

It is also necessary to keep the aquarium at a fairly constant temperature. An aquarium heater can be used to control the water temperature with some precision. You should also have an aquarium thermometer to verify the water temperature.

Fish tank/aquarium painting back wall?

I want to paint the back wall of my aquarium black (the outside of course). I was wondering if the tank needs to be empty to do this as well as what type of paint I should use so that it is safe for the fish. thanks

I have actually painted the back of a few of my tanks using blue (not black) acrylic paint. The fishes remained in the tanks, some contained black tetras, others tiger barbs, while still others fancy guppies.

There was no ill effect to any of the fishes. The only precautionary measure I did was to turn off all the airpumps of the tanks. And I use a paint brush NOT an aerosol spray can-paint type.
