Aquarium lighting - LED moonlighting (lunar)?

I just purchased a 125 freshwater tank, and thought it would be cool to have LED moonlights in there. I've seen the lights they sell for saltwater tanks, and they are really expensive. I'm looking for something that is just lunar (LED moonlights) lighting. Does anyone have any suggestions or links to some lights out there that are good quality?

Aquarium Lighting??????????????

I have a tetra art aquarium that has a 15 watt lighting system do i have to use the tetra bulbs or could i use a different make as i want to do a reef tank and would like to get a bulb which is compatible for corals. would this work?? would like answers from people who have had experience ith this tank not just a proberly thanks

If this comes across kinda of harsh, I apologize. I'm just trying to be straight-forward when I say that you aren't even scratching the surface.

I'm currently keeping soft corals, which are generally low on the light requirements, with 4 54-watt T-5 bulbs. Even then, I try to keep the corals up on the rock work whenever possible. Some corals can get by with less light than what I provide, but not by much. I personally wouldn't try to get away with less than what I have. For more photointensive corals, my lightning would be only be a drop in the bucket of necessity.

Lighting is not an area of unanimous consent among aquarists. If you have experience with saltwater and you'd like to move up to corals, I strongly suggest following some online forums and making your best judgment based on what you read there.

Before you just install your lights in your aquarium, you need to realize that the bulb is just one part of your lighting system. There are many aspects to this system that you need to maintain to ensure your lighting system is working in optimal condition. Understanding how to setup your lighting system is just as important as understanding the individual parts of your light system and how they work together.

Depending on the type of fish you will be caring for, you will need to consider what type - if any - light your fish will need. It is important that your fish meet the same temperature requirements. For instance if you have a fish that needs cold water and another that needs warm water, they both cannot coexist in the same aquarium without one or both being unnecessarily stressed.

If you are not certain what temperature would be best for your fish then you need to research it. Once you know, it's time to install your lighting system.

First consider your bulbs. Do you have replacements on hand should one suddenly fail or should you be unable to purchase one from your regular dealer? While most fish will not die if the temperature in their tank changes momentarily, they can become unnecessarily stressed if they are use to a warm environment.

What type of set up does your lighting need? Do you need a T5 light fixture? If so, have you taken precautions to ensure you have wired everything correctly?

If your light gives off plenty of heat, then you might need to consider a fan or cooling system. While some aquariums have fans built in the hood, that may not be enough to keep your tank the right temperature - especially if you're running a large tank with a large light.

Just as too little light can stress your fish, so can too much light. Ten to twelve hours of bright light is sufficient for most freshwater fish so consider installing a soft light that relaxes and soothes fish. If you are concerned about your tank overheating at night, use a soft LED light.

You might also consider a timer for your aquarium. Timers are a wise investment if your schedule is unpredictable or if you want to encourage your fish to follow a predictable cycle.

Once your lighting system is set up, you'll still want to check everything once again. Are the fans running properly? Is your cooling system working effectively? Is the light too bright or too faint for your aquarium? Does it make the fish look their best or just pale and dim?

If setup correctly, the right lighting system can highlight your beautiful aquarium, provide warmth and stimulate aquatic plant growth.

Obviously, you'll need a bulb that fits the socekt-- if it is an incandescent socket, you'll need either an incandescent bulb or a swirly fluorescent bulb. If it's a standard fluorescent tube socket, you'll need a standard fluorescent tube. Getting fancy, the spectrum will not matter unless you are trying to grow photosynthetic organisms (plants, corals, certain saltwater invertebrates). For freshwater plants, a spectrum between 5,500 and 6,700K is ideal. Corals and inverts generally need between 10,000 and 20,000K, and the lower the Kelvin temperature, the more need for additional actinic lighting.

Aquarium plants are as important to aquariums as water is to fish. Aquarium plants add more life to aquarium and make it to look beautiful while completing the aquarium community structure.

The most important thing to bear in mind with plants is to form an attractive background, leaving ample space so the fish can swim undisturbed and be seen. The tall, grassy type is best planted at intervals in rows, while the feathery ones look better when they are bunched into small clumps, which makes them to appear like branching bushes.

When planting rooted plants, hold the tips of the bunch of roots between the thumb and second finger and rest them on the sand. Now with the first finger push the upper part of the roots (where they join the stem) about 2cm into the sand. Without moving this finger scrape with the thumb and second finger some sand over any uncovered portion of the root.

When putting in rootless plants in bunches, the method explained above is repeated, but this time the lower ends of the stems are placed together and treated exactly as if they were roots.

It is important that the water surface should be right up to the lower edge of the top angle iron of the tank, so that looking from the front the water surface can not be seen and the viewer gets the impression that there is no water in the aquarium. If the level is allowed to fall below the top angle iron the tank looks like a container holding water.

Aquarium Lighting is also important for aquarium plants

This depends greatly on whether you intend to successfully grow plants or not. Lack of light causes colorful fish to fade and clanch-reds to pink, green to white. The two main methods of lighting aquarium are by the INCADESCENT and FLOURESCENT.

The total amount of light required is a matter of trial and error. Too much light will turn the water green; too little will stunt plant growth.

The lighting can be natural or artificial or a combination of both. The best position is near a north facing window. This should provide the ideal amount of indirect lights which an be supplemented by artificial light.

The lighting should be housed in wood constructed stylishly with the furniture and placed above the tank. if there is no natural day light, the lights should be left on for approximately eight hours per day.

If the water turns green, you cut down on the light.

The best light for showing off an aquarium comes from behind.

You can NOT do metal halide on a tank that small, even a 70 watt would fry everything . for a tank that small you need either T-5s or LEDS.
The ultraviolet light would burn any coral. Not to mention the heat given off from a metal halide would boil the water in a tank that small.

putting a glass lid on a tank will trap the heat in the tank and cause it to build even higher. You lower temperature or cool a tank by EVAPORATION. A glass lid will not allow evaporation to happen.

Saltwater fish are much more colorful than freshwater ones, and in a saltwater aquarium, you have many more options with corals, sponges, anemones and several other marine inhabitants. But, saltwater aquariums will also require greater maintenance, and that is the reason it is not easy to set up a saltwater aquarium for beginners.

Here are few steps to start out with a saltwater aquarium and to ensure that your aquarium becomes a successful life support system for its inhabitants:

1. Select the right tank.

Your first decision will definitely be to select the right kind of tank to house your saltwater inhabitants. It is always good to have a large tank with saltwater occupants, because of their big-size requirements. Keep at least a ten-gallon tank at the outset.

2. Set up the tank in the right place.

Saltwater fish and other occupants do not like direct sunlight, unless they are continental shelf inhabitants by nature. However, you must make sure not to place your tank in direct sunlight. There should be adequate light where the tank is placed, but no direct sunrays.

3. Set up the aquarium bed.

When you set up the saltwater aquarium bed, you have to make sure that the bed contains live matter. If you buy aquarium gravel then this problem is solved. Aquarium gravel contains biological media such as bacteria that will help to maintain the necessary cycles in the tank for the proper health of the fish living in it. You will also need to clean out this biological media if the water gets too cloudy. Other things you will need on the bed are a live rock, which is much the same in function as aquarium gravel, but is shaped like a rock, and air stones that will help to circulate bubbles of air within your saltwater tank.

4. Check out the requirements of lighting.

A basic rule is to have 4 watts of lighting per gallon of water in your tank. There are different kinds of lights available, like the metal halide lights and the fluorescent lights. When you are starting out, the fluorescent lights are better because they will be able to spread light out into the aquarium in a much better way.

If you have corals in your tank, then your lighting requirements will increase. Corals are light sensitive, and they grow healthier if light falls on them. Hence, you will have to take good quality lighting for your tank. The same applies if you have plants in your tank. But, for beginners, a planted aquarium could be quite tough to maintain. A better way is to begin with a tank that has only fish in it, and then graduate on to keeping plants and corals in the tank when they get enough practice with keeping fish in it.

5. Choosing the fish.

Yes, choosing the fish is the last step when building up a saltwater aquarium and not the first. You will have to select fish that are non aggressive with each other. One good idea is to select one fish first, let it live alone for about a week and then get another. When you do this, you allow the biological system to set in inside the tank before the second occupant is introduced. This also helps the biological media to get adjusted better.

I don't know that any brand is really that much better. The biggest difference between models is the type of housing, so if you like something "slim" go with the coralife (this is what I use, coralife double tube compact fluorescent). If it doesn't matter if it sticks up from your tank, I know lots of folks who use the orbits as well.

What makes the most difference should be the output (wattage) per fixture, and the wavelength (around 10,000K is best, but I know the 50/50 and actinic look good). Fans are good for dissipating heat. "Moon-glow" features look nice, but shouldn't be left on all night, so this is just another timer to have to buy (not to mention the one fixture I have this on has two "moon" spots on opposite ends of the tank - I don't know what planet this ocean is supposed to be on!).

Also, consider what you have in the tank - a lot of this is overkill if you've only got fish. Corals, anemones, & clams have different lighting needs - If you're just keeping a few, easy soft corals, you don't need as intense as if you are/are planning to keep stony corals with intense lighting needs.

Another practical piece of advice is what replacement lamps do stores near you carry and that is the price? Unless you buy two sets of lamps (one for a back-up) and replace the backups as soon as you put them in the fixture, it's almost a sure thing for the tubes to fizzle at the most inconvenient time! Make sure you can replace lamps regularly and easily!

For metal halides the most commonly used cover is light diffusion grid, or eggcrate . One side has a larger opening than the other side. you want the large up and the smaller down.
You can not use glass or acrylic on a tank with halides as this type of a lid would deprive the tank of oxygen and cause huge temperature issues as well.

Another method I have seen is to use what is called hardware cloth. You need to build a frame for this stuff and paint it with an oil based paint to stop rust, but it will not cause you any light loss to the tank, even the light diffusing grid will cut down some light.

I personally have never used a lid, there only a few fish that are known to jump, Wrasses and firefish are the common ones. If you have a canopy then a cover really is not needed, were will the fish go? they cant get out so they just end up back in the tank.
