handling aquarium water, filter, fish ok while pregnant?

I am moving apartments and I'm the only one who takes care of my 20 gal aquarium. I had to add water to the tank and reinstall the filter and handle everything inside the tank. I'm six weeks pregnant and didn't realize what I was doing until just now. I read about certain illnesses handling other animals, though it was cats, not fish. Is handling freshwater aquarium fish ok? i guess its stupid to ask now, i've already set up their tank and washed my hands a few times. Also, I had a scrape and a cut on my hand. I washed that too and used peroxide. Does anyone know if what I did was super bad or not?

There are very few diseases that are ever present in aquariums that humans can catch. The biggest and most famous it called Fish TB ( it's nothing like human TB) and even for that you would need an open wound exposed to infected fish. So there is basically no harm from a disease aspect at all.

The only real potential dangers would come from exposure to medications. Don't handle fish medications or the water medications are dissolved in without first showing it to your Dr. and asking about any potential risk. Several fish medications are known carcinogens, while others include antibiotics with unknown effect to an unborn baby. I am a fish disease and treatment specialist, but I'm in no way a Dr. or pharmacist so I will not attempt to list all of the potentially safe or potentially harmful drugs or chemicals you could encounter.

As long as your fish are disease free and you aren't treating the tank with medications, there is no risk.

When it comes to internal filters there are two basic types. The first is the under gravel filter seen primarily in fresh water tanks. This consists of a raised plastic grate that sits on the bottom of the tank. The gravel or base material is placed over the top and clear vertical tubes attach to holes in the filter. These tubes have either a power head sitting on top or a bubbler inserted into them. The water is forced to flow through the gravel and back up the tube into the tank. The gravel itself is the filter, collecting the extra food and fish waste that is pulled down into it.

The second internal type filter is more along the lines of a sump tank just below the main tank and is used mainly for salt water tanks. There is an internal tube that that allows water to flow down into the sump where it is pumped through a series of filters that catch all the waste and bad bacteria. The filtered water is then pumped back to the top of the main tank keeping a continuous flow going. This is a good filter choice but it is on the pricey side and does create quite a bit of background noise.

An external filter is the best choice for any fish tank, if you can afford to use it. All the filtering is done outside the tank, keeping the filtered water separate from the unfiltered water until it is returned to the tank. A couple of long hoses connect the filter to the tank, one that supplies the filter and the other that returns the filtered water to the tank. This type of filter is the most effective but also the most expensive.

You can purchase any of these types of filters at your local fish shop, but may have a harder time finding the more expensive external type at a general pet store. The sump type filter will require a tank that is either altered or custom made. If you are going to spend the extra money on this type of set up it makes better sense to spend the money on a good quality external filter instead. An external fish tank filter will cost more up front but in the long run you will save on maintenance costs and fish costs because you will be providing the best habitat they need to live long and healthy lives.

What type of aquarium filter should i buy?

I am going to buy a 10 gallon aquarium and put a chinese algae eater, 2 male swordtails, 1 male and 1 female dwarf gourmis, an albino rainbow shark, and 2 nerite snails. The aquarium will have a 5 inch bubble stone and a 15 gallon air pump. The aquarium will be heated to 78 degrees. There will be no live plants. I am leaning towards getting an aqua-tech 5-15 gallon box filter, but im not sure. I have heard alot of good things about bio-wheels. Im completely lost over wut kind of filter i should have. You guys always like specifics, hope that was specific enough, lol. Thanks for any answers!

Aqua-tech filter should be fine,they are just a cheap filter but I have one in with my cichlids and it works well.The only problem with them I find is there is no flow regulator to turn down the current which I like when I am keeping bettas.Make sure what ever filter you decide on the cartridges are easy to get in your area.

You have made that important decision to start your aquarium, but don't feel overwhelmed by all of the home aquarium supplies that you will need to get. Here is a nice list of equipment and terms that you should know before hand.

The first and most obvious thing that all aquarium aficionados need are aquarium tanks. Gone are the days of the boring ten gallon rectangular tank that can either be for your fish or your hamsters. Nowadays, you can find just about any size or shape that you can think of. Any amount of space you have will work no matter what the size.

Now before you go out and just buy something that fits, there are some things you need to think about first, the most important one being what kind of fish you would like to keep. The three main types are saltwater, freshwater and brakish. All three are great, but each require a different set of aquarium equipment. The full grown size of the fish, the type of water chemistry they need, what other fish will live with them are all factors to take into consideration. As far as size goes, A freshwater aquarium can take fish about one inch for every gallon of water and a saltwater tank should take one fish the same size for about every three gallons of water.

Once you establish all of this, choose a tank which fits you space, keeping in mind that a twenty gallon tank weighs about 170 pounds. Make sure the base can hold up under all the weight.

The next few things you will need are aquarium lighting, gravel, aquarium filters, air pumps, and heaters. You will need to investigate which type of each of these items will best suite the type of fish you have chosen. We can however talk a bit more about each of these items first just to give you some general information.

There are several types of aquarium lighting available. Again, the determining factor is not so much the fish, but whether or not your tank has plants and or reefs in it. Each one of these types of tanks have their own requirements, so it will take a bit more research to determine which kind of lighting to use. If you are planning a tank with only fish in it and no live plants, then you can go with a fluorescent or incandescent lighting setup.

A good aquarium filter is a definite must. There are three kinds that can work and it does depend on what type of fish and plants you are planning to keep. The three types of aquarium filters are mechanical, chemical and biological filtering. You can use one type or a combination to make sure your aquarium is one hundred percent clean and the water composition is correct.

Gravel is a must, and the type and size used is determined by the size of the fish you will keep. The type of biological filter system can also effect the size gravel chosen. As always, check with your pet shop pros to make sure that you are not making any wrong decisions.

One of the final pieces of equipment you will need is the tank heater. As you can see, the general theme here is that everything you decide on depends on the type and size of the fish, and this is no exception. Tropical fish can die if not kept at the correct temperature so care must be taken.

So that is a basic list of most of the home aquarium supplies that you will need. You can either purchase these items separately, or in a kit that has everything you need. Do some research and most importantly, enjoy your new aquatic friends.

Is it safe to have a koi carp in the same aquarium as sarasa comets?

I have an aquarium, fully kitted out with filter pump and air filters etc. There are 3 sarasa comets and 2 koi carp aswell as a catfish.

Koi carp can sadly not survive in aquariums. The absolute minimum for them is a 1000 gallon pond for one koi and 100 gals more for each koi after that. So you will need 1100 gallons. Plus 3 sarasas that take up 20 gals each and you get...1160 gallons. I highly recommend you get yourself a 1500 gallon pond.

Also, what catfish do you have? Some catfish grow large, and others eat other fish.

Koi carp are unsuitable for aquariums and once they get big, they can die. A 1" koi can outgrow a 150 gallon aquarium in a year.

More Pond Basics

Here are a few more basics about ponds from my pond information site:

*Cleaning

In a healthy pond, with a properly functioning nitrogen cycle, water changes can be minimal. I still recommend a water change of 10-20% per month on a healthy, fully functional pond. In a newer pond larger and more frequent changes may be necessary.

If your pond has a KH below 80 ppm and a pH below 7.0, I would first look to possible causes. One common one is the buildup of organic mulm on the bottom of the pond. The decomposition of this will produce nitric acids which will affect the pH and KH. Since most pond keeper have koi or goldfish, this is important to note, as both these fish do much better at a pH above 7.2 and need the calcium provided by the KH for proper osmotic function. See "Proper Calcium, Magnesium and KH in Aquariums" for more information about Calcium KH, and GH.

If a lot of leaves fall to the bottom of the pond vacuuming them or raking them out is important to prevent organic buildup.

Water changes also will help with pH and KH if your tap or well water is slightly alkaline and has a KH above 80 ppm.

*Feeding

Feeding a quality diet can be beneficial for growth, breeding, color, and eve the environment as there is less nitrogenous waste to add to the water column.

You want a food high in aquatic based proteins (although not too high in protein as most koi and goldfish are more “grazers”). Whole fish meal or white fish meal is a good source. An amino acid that is important to koi and goldfish is DL-methionine and is found in Whole fish meal as well as peas.

Cereal is not a good source of energy for fish as it is in humans, fish utilize fats more for energy. Cereal is mostly used as roughage and to move other nutrients thru the digestive tract.

In summer months I usually feed twice per day, as temperatures fall below 70 F in the pond I feed once per day. When temperatures fall below 60 F in the pond I feed every other day or less, depending on fish feeding habits. Below 50 F, I do not generally feed.

For adult Koi there are several quality foods available: Hai Feng, Sanyu, A-Zoo, Hikari, and Nursery-Pro just to name a few. For goldfish or shubunkins I recommend Spirulina 20 Flake, Hikari, or Sanyu. For fry (in addition to natural foods that will be available around the plant roots and other calm areas of the pond), I powder Spirulina Flakes and stir it into a cup of water, then pour this solution into the area the fish fry are at.

*Winter Pond Care

It is important in winter to keep at least a small section of your pond open for proper exchange of gasses (O2, CO2), if water can still flow into the pond through a water or aeration device, that will work. However if you live in an area of hard freezes, you may need a pond de-icer

*Pond Chemistry

Generally most Pond Fish such as Koi and Goldfish like a higher ph of about 7.8 (although a pH in the range of 6.8 to 8.0 is often acceptable). A well planted stable pond usually does not have problems with too high or too low a pH.

If your pH is too low, Sea Chem Marine Buffer can help (Wonder shells somewhat too). For large volumes of water, aragonite may be more cost effective.

For too high a pH, these are cost effective ways in a pond:

-Barley Straw (great for algae control too, although so-so for ph)

-Almond shells (this is really good for lowering ph, more effective than peat and with the side effect of being antibacterial)

-A veggie filter (this helps with a stable pH and produces nitric acid)

*Pond Bottom

Construction and make up of your pond can be done in three different ways (and there is no one best way; the best way fits your pond size needs, climate and budget).

A preformed pond is probably the most simple. With this method you basically dig a hole to the shape of the pond, remove sharp rocks, add sand for a cushion maybe cut a few holes on the size for bulk heads to add filtration and you’re ready to add rocks, filtration and décor. This style is good for small applications (usually under 250 gallons) and where roots or gophers may be a problem.

A pond liner made of PVC material or EPDM. I prefer the EPDM in a 45 mil. thickness.

With liners you can generally go up to a 1000 gallon pond. Preparation is similar to a preformed pond, however more care needs to taken with sharp rocks and a pre liner or sand should be used. Also in areas of high tree roots or gopher activity these can be compromised.

The other method is a concrete pond using rebar for support as well. This is probably the most expensive method however this is the method I recommend over 1000 gallons. I have subcontracted (installing the filtration) for many concrete ponds and it is important to use a good contractor or prepare and build this properly yourself as even a concrete pond that is poorly built can have problems. Make sure to not build a concrete pond on “fill” as the pond will often settle and crack. Also proper use of rebar is a must especially in ponds over 3000 gallons.

Bottom substrate:

I personally usually do not had a substrate per say, rather I allow the roots of potted plants (that will grow out of there pots) to collect there own debris. I do often add some zeolite or laterite both for absorption of some nutrients but also as an inexpensive plant root material.

*Spring Fed Pond

If you live in an area of natural springs or have creek flowing nearby, this can make for a very healthy, clear and natural pond. If it is possible to divert water into your pond (or just fill from below with a spring), this is always an excellent idea! This way you will likely maintain lower nitrates and phosphates, less algae, better Redox, and better electrolyte levels resulting in a more clear pond and healthier fish. Make sure to have an overflow or skimmer to remove excess water. If you have a well you can achieve similar results (or even use your well during the dry season when the spring or creek diversion dries up).

I also have achieved a similar effect with just plain tap water used in a very slow flow (a 10% water exchange per day or less will not show any ill effects from chlorine). Make sure this is not a problem with local water companies first, although the ponds I used tap water overflow on used less than 200 gallons per day (for a 2000 gallon pond) which is less than watering one’s lawn for an hour.

If with this method, filtration and circulation are still needed in my experience, although this often allows for a more simple filter (such a the Hydro-Pond Sponge Filter). A Veggie Filter is very usefull in this set-up too!

*Pond Predators

Herons have been the most common predator to my customer’s ponds that I have had to deal with. I do not like to add anything that detracts from the beauty of the ponds I maintained, so decoys were my first choice. I found Heron decoys worked well at not only scaring away Herons, but other predatory birds as well such as Cormorants. I also occasionally employed motion sensor scarecrows that connected to a water supply and then squirted ANYTHING that moved, this device also worked for dogs that would “play” in the pond (often destroying it and scaring fish), but was not as effective for raccoons.
