How should I clean my fish aquarium ornaments/decorations? Is bleach OK?

I have a 10 Gallon Aquarium and my decorations are very dirty.
The colour has faded into a dark brown dirty colour.

I wouldn't use bleach. The "dirt" probably contains some algae and living material that's healthy for a tank. If you want to clean them then take them out and use some water and simply scrub them with a clean sponge that's not been used for anything else (don't use any that have been in contact with soap or cleaning supplies). If you need something a bit abrasive then use epsom or aquarium salts (NOT table salt!). There's no need for bleach at all.

A planted tank does present a bit of a cleaning problem. If there are open areas, you can clean them with a gravel vac, but you can't really use one of these properly around the plants, or you'll risk damaging the roots. If the driftwood is free, you can pull it up while you vacuum around it, but if it's got plants attached with roots into the substrate, you can't really move these.

I've found that using some fish and inverts to clean in these areas are about as much as you can do. Kuhli loaches, small freshwater shrimp, and Malaysian trumpet snails are the best - they're thin and can get into tight spots, and the loaches and Malasians will burrow into the gravel just enough in seach of food and hiding places to keep it aerated and clean. If you're not familiar with malasians, they're only about 3/4 inch, hide in the gravel during the day, and don't eat plants. Just don't overfeed the fish, because if they have a good food supply, they multiply like crazy. If you feed as you should, they snails stay within reasonable numbers. The kuhli's will also help keep the numbers under control.

What can I make aquarium decorations with?

I would like to make my own freshwater aquarium decorations, specifically, The Alamo. What can I use to make it that would be safe for my future fish?
I was thinking more along the lines of creating it with plaster or something along those lines, that is not water soluable, and is non-toxic.

You can use rocks of quartz or granite and hold them together with aquarium sealant .This works using any other kind of stone might cause you problems . Make sure you let the sealant cure for the right amount of time and then let the whole thing just sit in clean water for a few days before putting it in your tank .

If i have already set up an aquarium with decor and fishes in, can i still add gravels after?

I think it would be okay just make sure the gravel has all the dust and dirt rinsed off and pour it in the tank slowly// I'd like to have one myself// what size do you have?Here in Tn we can buy game fish (bas,bream,bluegill and catfish and i think it would be neat to have an aquarium and put those fish in it///

Many aquarium keepers think that a planted aquarium is much more difficult to maintain than an unplanted one, but live plants will actually help the aquarium owner with the maintenance work by having a beneficial influence on the water quality.

A well-planted aquarium can also reduce stress in fishes and make them more prone to spawning. Many common fish diseases will primarily attack stressed fish, and providing your aquarium inhabitants with a safe and restful environment that is similar to their native home is therefore a very wise decision.

There are however many fish species that should not be kept with plants since they will destroy them. There are also many fish species that will feel more at home in an aquarium decorated with rocks and caves, or empty sea shells, than with plants. (You can of course combine live plants, rocks and empty sea shells in the same setup.)

If you are a beginner aquarium keeper, or have not kept live plants before, you should ideally begin with sturdy plant species such as Java Fern or Amazon sword. These plants can adapt to a wide range of different water conditions, which means that you can place them in most aquariums regardless of exact temperature, pH and hardiness.

They are also sturdy enough to withstand nibbling fishes, and if a plant becomes uprooted by a digging fish it is usually not a catastrophe for the plant. If your fishes are very fond of digging, you can instead opt for floating plants or plants that can be attached to aquarium decoration instead of being planted in the substrate.

All plants will need light, carbon dioxide and nutrition to survive, but some plants are more demanding than others. The sturdy plant species mentioned above can be kept in an ordinary aquarium with only standard aquarium light, no added carbon dioxide and no fertilization.

If you choose plants that are native to clear waters or plants that grow close to the surface in very sunny regions of the world, they can require very powerful lights, such as fluorescent bulbs or metal halide. Between these two extremes you will find the moderately demanding plant species that need roughly twice as much light as the standard light in an aquarium.

A common recommendation for moderately light demanding plant species is 20W for each square foot of tank surface area, or 2W per gallon of water. These recommendations are however quite vague and the only way to find out exactly how much your particular plants need is of course to research each plant species.

The necessary amount of light will also be affected by other factors, such as how densely planted your aquarium is and how far down the light has to penetrate.

As mentioned above, all plants need light, carbon dioxide and nutrition to survive and if you adjust one of these three factors you will often need to adjust the other two as well. Never add extra light without first finding out if you need to add more nutrients and/or carbon dioxide to the water as well.

Carbon dioxide and nutrients are naturally produced by your fish, but for some plants species this is not enough and they will need additional carbon dioxide and/or fertilizers to be able to fully benefit from the increased light.

Make a mixture of about 10% bleach and 90% water. Let the decorations soak in it for a bit - you will see the algae go away - then rinse very well and allow to fully dry before returning it to the aquarium - if it dries fully then there are no traces of bleach and you have a very clean decoration!

Freshwater Fake Aquarium Plant Question?

Hi, I am planning to have both live and fake plants in my tank to give it a lush look. The question is, I have bought some plastic plants from the Dollar Store from the plant decor section and they do look very much like plants for aquarium. Is it okay to put them in my aquarium after detailed washing?

please dont take offence to my answer, and im not trying to be rude, and im not telling you what to do.

live and fake plants together will look awful. i would choose either one or the other. personly ide choose live plants. look at my tank and youll see what i mean. this tank is only 7 months old.

if you want me to help you or give you sagustins and help you along the way, just send me an email and ill provide you with as much info as you need. ive only been doign this for 8 months, but ive learnd more then most people learn in a class room. i assure you, planted tanks are more fun ,and they look better and more natural. they are healthier for the aquarium and its inhabitence. im 19, but look at my tank.

There are many diseases that can affect your aquarium fish and once your tank is infected, there's a good change that all your fish can get sick. Luckily, keeping a disease free tank is not that hard. Most disease is a result of poor water quality so not overcrowding your tank and keeping a regular maintenance schedule is a must.

As the water becomes more toxic your fish become more "stressed", the more stressed your fish becomes the easier it is for the micro organisms present in your aquarium water to infect your fish with various diseases.

So how do you tell if your tropical fish are stressed?

Tropical fish don't react the same way to stress as people do, but there are some tell tale signs you can be on the look out for. Some things to look for include; fish rubbing themselves against the gravel or aquarium décor, fish hiding in the corner or under plants or rocks all the time, fish bobbing around with their fins close to they body and any growths or white fuzzy spots are some of the things that indicate aquarium disease.

Of course, the first step in treating aquarium disease is preventing it. Here's some steps to make sure your aquarium remains free of disease.

1. Don't overcrowd your fish tank. Your tank can only support so many fish - the more fish you have the more waste they create and if the filtration cannot handle the waste you end up with toxins in the water that can accumulate to dangerous levels over time. The larger the tank, the more fish you can have.

2. Acclimate new fish to the tank properly. When you bring a new fish home form the pet store, it's already been through quite a bit. Shipped from the breeders to the new store and put in a new tank, then transported into your tank all can be stressful to the fish. To acclimate your fish properly, make sure you float him in the bag in your aquarium for 10 minutes then open the back and introduce some of your aquarium water into the bag, let that sit for about 10 minutes and then let the fish out into your tank.

3. Make sure to have great water quality. Since poor water quality is the greatest case of fish disease and death you'll want to be diligent about your tank maintenance and partial water changes. Also, make sure to test the PH and nitrite / nitrate levels and adjust the tank accordingly. This is quite easy and there are test kits made for testing as well as adjusting the water.
