Setting up an aquarium would be a needed skill for tropical fish owners. You will know how to put up a livable habitat for you pet. Getting the right size aquarium for your pet is important. A room for growth should be considered. Knowing the right ph level and toxic substances that can pollute you aquarium water is also important. You do not want to just wake up one morning and find all your tropical fish dead.

You should also know that a tropical fish can have diseases. The most common is the growth of white spots on its body. This is caused by a parasite called “ich” or “ick”. This kind of disease is very contagious and can kill all your tropical fish in just days.

Cleaning your tank is very important. This will help lessen contaminants and bacteria from thriving with your fishes. Its growth can be fatal to your tropical fish. If you will add a new fish on the tank, you can first have it isolated and observed if it will get sick or has a disease.

Feeding your fish regularly can help maintain the health of your tropical fish. One should not over feed your fish. Uneaten food can pollute their water and can be quite hazardous for their environment. There are different types of tropical fish. Others can live on scraps while others are quite picky with their diet.

If you are a neophyte keeping a tropical fish as a pet, be sure to do your research first. Do not just buy anything you fancy. There are species of tropical fish that does not live well with other types. Asking for professional help is also a great idea.

My aquarium water turned a solid green just after filling it with clean water. What happened?

My aquarium water turned a dense green about an hour after filling it with clean water. I drained it and refilled it and again within an hour it was solid green. I've done this four times and can't get it clear. What happened? I tried putting everything in boiling water, filling the tank with boiling water but as soon as it cools it's green again. I've never had this problem before.

Algae are mostly-photosynthetic organisms that sometimes resemble plants but are not plants, having no true roots, stems or leaves. Algae grow in freshwater and saltwater. Saltwater algae are sometimes referred to as "seaweed." Like plants, algae require light and nutrients to grow. We supply plenty of both in our aquariums, with several hours of aquarium lighting a day and nutrients like nitrates and phosphates from fish waste.

Algae come in many forms. There are microscopic, one-celled algae, filamentous algae that resemble hair, algae that grow in sheets, and macroalgae that look like plants. There are even algae that live inside the outer integument ("skin") or calcium shell of some corals, anemones, and other sessile invertebrates called zooxanthellae. There are slimy-looking algae that are often not algae at all, but a colony of primitive photosynthetic organisms known as cyanobacteria. There are also very hard-to-remove little dots of green that sometimes grow on aquarium panels which also are not algae, but diatom or radiolarian colonies (microscopic, one-celled, animals with hard shells) with algae incorporated in their matrix. With all that said, let us answer some common questions right up front:

Algae growth is inevitable in an aquarium.
Algae consume nutrients in the aquarium that if allowed to accumulate, are harmful to fish. Algae can be a good thing.
The presence of green algae in an aquarium indicates a healthy environment for fish.
There is absolutely no way to completely prevent algae from growing in an aquarium, without killing the other life in the tank.
Chemicals should never be used to control the growth of true algae in an aquarium, and should only be used in rare circumstances to control cyanobacteria.
Correcting a severe algae problem requires time and patience.
Natural methods of controlling algae are the best and most effective.

Algae removal from the tank panels can be done on an as-needed basis, but no more than once a week. Removing algae involves either correcting negative water conditions to control or slow excessive algae growth, or an age-old process known as "elbow grease" (scrubbing it off!). Algae removal in an aquarium should be done only when necessary. We have seen many aquariums where daily removal of algae resulted in fish that were so stressed, most had diseases and were dying. You should never remove all of the algae from your tank. Allowing some algae to grow in the aquarium can be beneficial to the aquatic environment. When algae is removed from aquarium side panels, care should be taken to select an algae scrubber that will not hurt the finish of an aquarium. Be careful not to get gravel caught in an algae scrubbing pad where it can scratch the aquarium. Never use household cleaning pads to remove algae. They contain fungicides that kill fish.

Your first mistake is boiling the water. Boiling water consentrates the nitrates in it causing algae to grow even faster. However, I've never heard of it growing within an hour Wow!

First, test the water you are filling up your tank with. Many public water supplies (our homes) have a concentration of nitrates at around 7ppm or higher. (Bottled water is no better).

This could be the start of your problem.
Be sure your tank is not within direct or indirect lighting such as a window or in a room where the lights are on constantly. Is you tank near a heat source. Sometimes we do not take into consideration a fishtank is near a heat register which can and does add additional temperature changes to your tank.

Did you clean the filter as well? Be sure the entire filter is cleaned and free of algae.

Use a razor or scraper and gently scrape all sides of your tank. Clean your gravel and return it to the tank as well. DO NOT wash the gravel in the tank. The residues of the algae will remain.

Since you have NO FISH I am assuming, use cold water to start your tank. Algae likes heat and light. Using cold water will prohibit growth. Allow your tank to run bringing it to room temperature. Then you can plug in your heater allowing your tank to run.

If you have a stick on thermometer, get yourself a floating one. The stick on thermometers pick up ambient air temperatures from OUTSIDE the tank and can be up to 10 degrees off. DON"T trust them. Try keeping your tank at 72 for a couple of days.

You can also purchase phosphorus pads for around $2.00 at your local pet store. These can be cut to fit with your filter and remove large amounts of phosphorus. These can be reused over and over just remember to rinse them out well when you clean your tank.

Test your water. Since you have not gone thru the cycle process allow your tank to run. This should really help with the algae. If you find your water quality is all your tank isn't near a heat or light source, ok but still getting algae turn the temperature down or off and let it run. You will want to scrape the sides of the tank and do a water change no more than 20% every other day. This should only be done if the algae returns in a heavy form.

Ever wonder why your friend's fish tank is cleaner than yours? Or how come you have to clean twice as much as him when you both use the same products and have the same kind of fish? It's probably because he is using some type of water filter but not just any kind - it's most likely a reverse osmosis (ro) system. A reverse osmosis system will remove a very good majority of impurities out of the water. Impurities like phosphates, nitrates, and heavy metals exist in most water sources even in bottled water.

Many tap water sources contains phosphates and nitrates which is the main food source for algae. When there is an abundance of these elements, algae will tend to grow very rapidly and stick to your glass making you spend your valuable time on cleaning the glass. Copper is another notorious element found in tap water which comes from the copper plumbing. Copper is can be very toxic to invertebrates and should be removed quickly to prevent any illnesses or unfortunate deaths within your aquarium. The best way to combat these impurities is by using a reverse osmosis system coupled with a mixed bed deionization (DI) filter. A reverse osmosis filter alone will remove about 95-98% of the impurities and the mixed bed DI filter will catch anything that is left behind. Together both will remove about 99.9% of impurities.

Another related problem to untreated water is the effects of pH conditioners. With untreated water, pH conditioners tend to be less effective due to the amount of impurities in the water. Reverse osmosis (ro) water coupled with mixed bed DI filtration will typically have nero zero TDS (total dissolved solids) in the water making it much easier for you to pH balance. With RO/DI water, you will be able to use less pH conditioners and minerals for pH balancing than with untreated water.

It requires very little maintenance and will help with saving time and costs. When the filters for the filtration system is serviced regularly, the costs in the long run outweigh any short term immediate bandage. Almost any standard reverse osmosis system on the market can be turned into an aquarium ready system simply by adding a mixed bed di filter. So join your friend and try using a reverse osmosis system with a DI filter. You will be surprised at the quality of water that you get.

You really don't. You can regulate the amount of algae using natural means like snails and fish. A pond shouldn't be crystal clear all the time anyway, it has to go through biological adjustments and changes according to temperature, rainfall, content. I like it when a pond naturalizes; eventually the heavy content will settle out and you will have clear water. Using an algaecide will immediately rob the water of available oxygen and you'll have a lot of dead fish (if you have fish).

The widest spectrum possible is best... If you have room for two bulbs, I'd recommend a 5,500-6,700K bulb and a 10,000K bulb-- the former will bring out the yellows and reds, while the latter will highlight the yellow. Tetra's are pretty delicate, they need a well aged fully cycled tank. (google freshwater tank cycling) If you wish to try cycling the tank with fish, I would recommend zebra danios, (just 2) they are a schooling fish & once your tank is cycled you will want to slowly build their school up to at least 6 (provided your tank is at least 56 litres or approx 12.5 uk gallons) You should purchase a freshwater test kit that tests for ammonia, nitrite & nitrate. In a fully cycled tank the ammonia will read 0 ppm, nitrite 0ppm and the nitrates should be kept under 40 ppm. Zebra Danio are hardy fish, and are often used in the cycling process. You want to keep very few fish untill the tank is fully cycled, and once your perameters are stable, you can slowly add more fish to your tank, (2-3 fish per month when nitrates are at about 20ppm) untill you reach stock capacity. see article: http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/tanks-uk.htm

Q2 pretty much everything...The tank needs to be cycled or at the very least left with filter running for at least 48 hours before adding any fish. Always research the fish you are interested in & thier needs before buying them. Make sure you buy them from a reputable fish store,(usually they won't sell you the tank & the fish in the same day, and they require a water sample for testing before they will let you take a fish home) Only put things in your aquarium that are made for aquariums unless you are knowledgeable about how to make items safe for your tank. (usually through baking, or boiling)

Does anybody know where I can get replacement light bulbs and cords for my old plastic Christmas decorations?

I have Santa Claus and Rudolph for inside, and two large candles for outdoor decorations. They are just plastic with a hole in the back for a light bulb with a cord on it. I need to replace the lightbulb and cord set. I've been to Hobby Lobby, Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. and can't find anything like that. Is there anywhere online?

If the items still have tags or you kept any boxes paperwork that came with them..contact the company that made them by calling or looking them up on the web.
They may have the replacement items you need.
If not..
This sounds like a bulb with a clip that holds it in place to me..I would search on line ..major hobby shops, lighting repair places. If all else fails you might contact a small household item repair shop..that repairs lamps..they might be able to redo the wiring for you and fix a new type of fixtures to fit..just be safe with wattage and not cause a fire.

Im going to start up a new saltwater aquarium... good beginner fish?

I have kept freshwater aquariums before... I currently have 2 blood parrots in a 46 gallon... and ive got another 40 gallon which iwould like to put some saltwater fish in...

Saltwater tank requires lot more of your time than FW tank. I spend at least 4 to 6 hours a week on my marine tank while I spend less than 10 minutes a week on FW tank.

SW tanks also require much more investment to be successful or else it will be disappointment after disappointment.

Most hardiest fish in SW hobby are damsels. Damsles such as yellow tailed blues or blue are good beginner fishes and they can also be used for cycling the tank.

Clown fishes are also another favorite and easy fish to take care of.

There are some very aggressive damsel such as 3 or 4 srtipped or sergeant damsels that can create havoc among with other fishes.

Saltwater fish aquariums can make a beautiful and interesting addition to any office or home, but saltwater fish are not easy species to take care of and there is a lot that any saltwater fish beginner needs to know before they purchase their first tank. There are many aspects to saltwater fish care, and there are also various levels of fish which you can keep, ranging from quite easy to look after to difficult. It all depends on your level of dedication and patience whether you are able to maintain the best fish care so that your fish thrive and survive in their environment.

If you are a beginner, then there are a few items that you will need before you purchase any fish. First of all you will need a tank and the size of this fish tank really depends on the species of fish that you are planning to keep. If you are not sure about the size of the tank which you need, then you should ask in your local pet store and the staff will be only too happy to help you out. As well as a tank, you will also need sand for the bottom, a heater, salt mix, a protein skimmer, a hydrometer and a pH kit so that you can monitor the pH levels in your tank to ensure optimum fish care.

You should start your new fish tank off by introducing brackish live bearing freshwater fish but you must make sure to remove these before adding more aggressive fish into the tank. There are these pipe cleaner that are sold in some aquarium shop, it looks like a small milk bottle bursh ( those brush to clean babies milk bottles).

How it works is that you need to get a string through to both ends of the pipe and then tie the brush to one end of the string and pulling the brush through the plastic tube from the other end. Do it a couple of times and the tube will look as good as new. Just remember you have to get the right size brush to fit the diameter of your tube.

How do you make the right decisions about the care of koi fish especially in terms of the appropriate size of pond? This article introduces you to the koi fish and then considers aspects of their care as they grow in size.

The Koi is one of the best fish and one of the most preferred fish for populating water ponds. It is found breeding in captive in millions of fresh water ponds all around the world. These fish types are loved by thousands of people not only for the different colors you can find them in, but also for their long life. The longest Koi fish to ever survive to date has managed to make a record of living for as long as 226 years.

The word 'koi' itself originates from Japan and it is believed that these fish have been bred in Japan since 1820. You can find these fish types in a wide variety of colors like yellow, red, silver, white, black, orange, green or even blue. Since the external environment and the diet affects the appearance of this fish so it is understood and appreciated how much time it mush have taken for the Japanese to breed such a magnificent carp variety.

Even though the koi is not a typical schooling fish, they can be quite sociable as they do live quite well cohabiting with a number of other fish varieties especially in smaller ponds where these fish can manage to survive well together but when placed in a large pond area they may sometimes divide into smaller groups.

As they grow to a larger size, they are better able to survive in ponds that have a capacity of at least 500 gallons of water or even more. In case you are thinking of holding smaller koi fish in a small pond to start with, you may have to pay close attention to their size and their comfort in the pond as they continue to grow bigger.

You may have to increase the size of the pond or even give away the bigger koi in exchange for smaller ones. It is very important that you maintain the number of fish you have in each pond relative to the size of and the amount of the water that is present in the pond. Make sure to observe and monitor their size and number so you can judge how many fish it can hold at a maximum to keep the fish healthy.

You have to keep in mind that the health of this fish depends on the amount of space that is available in the pond. You also have to look at the cleanliness of the water as it might affect the health of the fish. As these fishes are expensive as compared to gold fish for example, so that's another good reason to look after them.

As they are cold water fish so try to maintain the water temperature between 61 to 75 Deg F. These fish can survive well in cold waters so they can also be kept outdoors during winter.

The pond has to be at least 3 feet in depth. So with the coming of winter the fish may tend to go under hibernation for a period during which time they slow down their digestive system, almost halting it altogether. Avoid feeding the fish when temperatures drop below 50 Deg F as food present in their stomach may be difficult to digest and be detrimental to health.

best way to clean a 2.5 gallon acrylic tank with gravel, fake plant and ornament.?

I have seen magnetic cleaning devises and such, but looking for the best way to clean the tank, in addition to 25% water changes. Thank you in advance!

I have a few 2.5 Gallons and 5 Gallons tanks, I always feel those magnetic don't do the job very well and it do damage the surface of the tank. You know, I get a toothbrush and soak it in water a few time to make sure it is save to put it in my tank. Then, everytime I do water change, I just use the toothbrush to clean off algae that have been build up on the side of the tank.

Also, as ZooTycoonMaster mention, you do need to clean your gravel.

Having a fish tank is fun. However, the amount of work required to keep it clean is tremendous. Most people are unaware of the most effective methods to keep the fish tank clean and they have to resort to changing the water regularly to maintain the cleanliness of the tank. As a result of this, people are becoming negative about keeping fishes as they find it a chore to clean the tank and change the water frequently. In fact, this is not true. There are many treatments out there that could help to reduce the number of times that we need to change the water. In this article, I will answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the more effective ways of keeping the tank clean. 

How do I remove algae growth in the water? 

It is common to see algae growing on the surface of the tank. However, it does not mean that we need to clean the tank to remove them. Instead, we can introduce a type of fish named the Chinese algae eater which sticks on the sides of the tank and the main purpose of keeping this eater is because they help to remove the existing algae. Algae are harmful to the fish as it reduces the oxygen content in the water. However, the Chinese Algae Eater will turn aggressive in the adult stage which makes it more appropriate to get a baby Chinese algae eater.

Is there any equipment to reduce the amount of work required to keep the tank clean? 

A filter will help to keep the tank slightly cleaner. A filter is an equipment which removes the fish waste and excess food that sinks to the bottom of the fish tank. There are two types of filter -- internal and external filter. The internal filter is cheaper but it does not separate the filtered water from the fish tank. On the other hand, the external filter is much more expensive but it separates the filtered water from the water that is within the bank. You will still need to clean the filter occasionally to remove any gravel or plants that might be stuck in it.

What if the water is still dirty after using the Chinese algae eater and the filter? 

The Chinese algae eater and filter are tools to help reduce the amount of work required to keep the tank clean. This means that we will still need to change water frequently to completely remove the impurities that are within the tank. While changing the water, it would be wise to rinse the pebbles to remove any dirt and dust. If you have any ornaments that are placed in the tank, you should also clean the ornaments to prevent any algae growth.

Now that you have the solutions to the frequently asked questions, you should not be giving any excuses of being lazy and not keeping the fish tank clean.

is there any type of fish that could be kept in a 1 gal. aquarium with no filter or air pump?

I was wondering if there was a fish that could be kept in a 1 gal. tank with no filter or air pump. if you know of a fish that can be please let me know.

You can keep a Betta in it but you will have to do water changes two or three times a week. No you can not keep goldfish in a tank that small. They grow to 9"-12". Betta's don't need filters or aerator's because they get there air from the top and gulp air. They are labyrinth breathers.

So you've set up your aquarium, waiting patiently until the tank has cycled, you've introduced your fish slowly allowing the biological filter to improve, your plants are growing well using up all the nitrates, the tank is looking great and then it happens.

You get Algae.

How can this be, you've done everything right, water quality is good, the fish are happy, why has this happened?

The simple answer is that every aquarium has algae to some extent, so don't despair, you are not unusual and there is probably very little if anything wrong with your tank.

Aquarium Algae control is all about balance. If you have set up a planted aquarium you have probably created a mini environment that is perfect for growing plants and that is exactly what algae is, so it is hardly surprising that they move in at the first opportunity.

So, rather than trying to cure algae simply accept that they are a part of aquarium life. Don't pump the water full of chemicals trying to get rid of them, simply come up with a plan to control them and keep them to an acceptable level.

Apart from regular water changes, there are a number of other things that come into algae control, but the one driving force behind any aquarium algae control strategy is to control the nutrients that go into the water as these control the plant growth which in turn helps to control algae growth.

Sounds simple, and at a basic level it is simple but you need to watch out for the details. Algae thrive on nitrates. Your fish produce waste that gets converted to nitrate. Because nitrate is a natural fertiliser your plants will use this up as well so, when you plant your tank you need to include some fast growing plants that can compete favourable for the nitrates, helping to keep the levels down, effectively starving the algae.

Algae love light. Put your freshwater aquarium in direct sunlight and see what happens. Boom! Green water in no time. Too much light can favour the algae over the fish so make sure that the light is between two and four watts per gallon and make it full spectrum light as this favours the plants over the algae.

Some plants need added potassium in order to grow to their best. Anything that helps the plants to grow robs the algae of nutrients. Potassium does not help algae so make sure that you are adding potassium at the recommended levels.

Also make sure that you are monitoring trace elements such as iron. Some of the trace elements found in fertilisers will help plants so again make sure that these are in the water in the right quantity.

It is all a balancing act. Unfortunately there is no right or wrong answer. If you are using your local water it will start out different to mine. Monitor everything, keep good records and see what works. Once you know what works, all you have to do is maintain the right levels.

Remember, a little bit of algae is great for the fish. Use some algae eaters as well. Not just fish but also snails and shrimps who all help to keep the gravel clean and the nitrate levels down.

Balance is the key. Checking water quality, keeping good records and finding what works for you.
