How do you setup a semi-aquatic tank for salamanders?

ive got a big 55 gal tank (i no i dont need that much for salamanders) i want semi-aquatic salamanders so how do i setup a tank for them THX =)

Take a foam log (they sell these at petsmart, they're made of a spongy material) and devide the tank with it.

Now, water will go through the log (and will keep your ground moist and your humidity high), so you need to take river rocks, or pebbles (medium sized, not tiny but not huge) and pour them almost up to the top of the log, or as high as you want the water level. Then take fine meshed netting (like you'd find in a screen window) and cover the rocks with it. Take your substrate (I used eco earth mixed with tiny, airy clay balls. My frogs + newts love it) and cover the rocks. Your substrate should come up to the top edge of the log, and it should be a flat plane from the log across the ground.

Now you're ready to add your water! Make sure you have a filter (I used one that looked like a waterfall, but you don't have to. I just did it because it was pretty.) The filter will pull water from both sides of the cage, down through the rocks and the sponge on the land side, and will spit out clean water. Because the filter will pull your animals' waste down into the rocks, beneficial bacteria will develop and you will have a happy little eco system.

You do not want the water to be completely clear, but too dark means it's dirty. It should look like very weak tea, a light, translucent brown color. That means you've established your eco system and helpful bacteria is living in the water and helping to break down waste.

Then it's up to you! I used moss and other plants to decorate my land area, and I used a thin layer of river rock at the bottom of the water area.

Will You Need A Fish Tank Stand For Your Aquarium?

One of the important steps in setting up your new aquarium is selecting the correct fish tank stand. The stand not only has to adequately support the tank itself, it can also serve a wider variety of needs. You certainly do not want to place your new fish tank on a flimsy bookcase or even a table.

Fish tank stands can seem rather expensive items; however, there is little option but to purchase one. Most items of furniture around the house are not designed to hold the weight of a fish tank for any length of time.

An advantage of fish tank stands built for a specific sized tank is that they appear more unobtrusive than sitting the tank on an unused piece of furniture. My fish tank thermometer broke and the water looks like there was an oil spill what should i do?

i noticed it a couple of days ago an my turtles look fine they do the same things should i be concerned.

I would definitely remove the water and clean the tank and everything you had in it. As you don't know exactly what was in the termometer, its better to be safe than sorry.

Would my new Salt water tank be okay with just a biowheel filter and without a protein skimmer?

55 gallon tank 70 pounds of live rock biowheel filter for a 100g tank... my livestock will b a pair of clowns 5 chromis and 3 yellow tail damsels. i know i should have a protein skimmer because of the LR breaking down and the filter might not be able to pick up the little pieces. but will i be okay? if i do water changes
i will have 3 protein skimmers going each moving 180 gallons per hour.. also i have an update on the power filter its an imagine gold bio system power filter 350gph this also has an oxy surface skimmer.. sorry i forgot the name of my powerfilter

While you can run a marine tank without a protien skimmer you will have more problems controlling nitrate, i.e. you will need to do more water changes.

The protien skimmer works to remove tiny particles of organic matter from the water. If they are left in the water they break down and form ammonia, which your filter and live rock process into nitrate.

So without the skimmer, the nitrate builds up faster.

If you are on a budget, set up your tank, but only add some of the fish. Get a protien skimmer later and then the rest of the fish.

There are some accessories and materials very important in protecting saltwater aquarium. One is the special additives like kalkwasser(calcium), strontium and iodine. These enhance the beauty of the rocks and encourage growth of pink coralline algae. Kalkwasser is calcium hydroxide solution which captures carbon dioxide to create bicarbonate ions. Strontium solutions are used to open corals. Iodine is used by microalgae, bacteria, fish, coralline algae and other invertebrates.

Heater and thermometer are important because water temperature should be kept at 74-78 degrees Fahrenheit. Heaters are used to keep the temperature warm especially during winter time. An additional unit of heater is a good choice for backup use.

Synthetic salt mixes are specially formulated aqua salts used to condition seawater and maintain levels of salinity. It must be closed to natural sea water composition and far from unwanted impurities. It is important to know how it was prepared (composition) and the source of fresh water. The affordability and popularity of the product can add as bases for consideration. The most popular salt mix is Instant Ocean according to a poll conducted.

Hydrometer is a device to check the gravity and salinity of water. Some devices are sold with no need for calibration yet are high precision units. Most units are made of hard plastic which makes them durable.

Ground fault circuit interrupter is a device to disrupt electricity flow. It is a special electrical receptacle which stops electrical power for safety purposes.

Always decontaminate coral rocks to prevent harming the marine fish. These rocks add elegance and serve as decorations in the aquarium. Rocks can be of different styles and colors. Some of the rocks include rainbow, carved lava and lace rocks.

Power heads are submersible water pumps. They move water around for oxygen. An aquarium must have 2 to 3 multiple power heads.

Protein skimmer is a device to aerate water and remove waste products. It is also known as a foam fractionator. It can operate thru current or counter current flow. Some units sit in a sump while others sit outside, or hang on the back or rim of the aquarium.

The refractometer is used to check nitrates, nitrites and ammonia levels. It is also known as saltwater hydrometer. Some units are lightweight, portable, and accurate.

Test water kits check the temperature of water. These kits are important because water conditions easily change over a short period of time.

Pneumatic water transference device is also known as turkey baster. It is used to move waste out of nooks so it can be filtered.

How often do I need to change the filter cartridges?

I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with 6 green tiger barbs, 2 platyes and 1 dwarf gourami. My filter is a biowheel for a tank up to 50 gallons. I have a couple questions. 1)How often do I need to change the cartridges? 2) There is a slot to put in an extra cartridge so you can use two at once. Is this really necessary? Will I have to change the cartridges if I do this? Will my water really be cleaner if I use two?

Your 29 gal. tank carries a low bioload (you haven't crowded it with a lot of fish) so you won't need a double-filter media (one should be sufficient). Change the filter media (the fluffy bag usually with carbon bits inside) when it starts to look cloggy and dirty (this will depend on how badly the particle mass may get in your tank). I generally like to change the carbon (and if the bag is sealed, you'll probably have to do the whole bag) at least once a month to keep the carbon fresh and working. The carbon deodorizes (removes the smell) the water but if the carbon becomes old and overwhelmed, it stops working. The filter media basically just removes the particals, not the ammonia and nitrite and nitrates. You should not have to clean or change your biowheel ever unless you forget to remove it if you ever have to medicate the tank--the biowheel will be one of your major sources of good bacteria (if the wheel should start looking slimey and clogged, just rinse it quickly under clean running (not hot, not real cold) water to remove the clog). 2 cartridges will only do more particle removal (and since your tank should not be making too much dirt, 2 would be overkill). 1 cartridge ought to keep your water looking clean and clear, but you'll still need to do routine gravel cleanings and water changes to keep the ammonia/nitrite level at zero (a filter does not do that).

Fish Tank Pet

What are the odd behaviours of your pet fish?

I just got my new tank and pet fish so I'm kinda new to this. I want to know what odd things they do while they're swimming in there. I saw some funny swimming strokes and I enjoy watching.

My comets like to swim into the bubbles that my air pump makes and then "ride" the bubbles up to the top of the tank like an elevator. It's very funny.

Fish tank gravel is what most people use to cover the floor of their fish tanks. While gravel is a popular choice, there is also aquarium sand available at pet retailers and online fish supply stores. Aquarium sand can give your aquarium a tropical look, but fish tank gravel is economical and easier to use. The best decision for your tank can only be made after you weigh the pros and cons.

Gravel is the easiest fish tank floor covering to use. It comes in many different colors that you can use to customize the look of your tank. You can have everything from neon green and pink to natural looking grey and brown stones.

Gravel is also easier to clean. You can use a gravel vacuum during the cleanup process to suck up small bits of debris and waste. The vacuum will eliminate the tiny pieces while still leaving the gravel intact on the fish tank floor.

On the other hand, gravel shifts a lot more than sand does. If you plan on using live plants in your aquarium design, you may find that they will become disheveled and uprooted over time. It can also display pockets and needs to be smoothed out from time to time.

Aquarium sand is a bit trickier to use. You must turn off the filter on your tank when you first start to use the sand. It is very cloudy to begin with and you have to give it time to settle. You also may need to get an upgraded filter that won't get stuck on the tiny sand particles. Debris shows up much more clearly with sand than it does with gravel.

On the positive side, live plants root well in the sand surface. Sand gives a much more professional look to your tank. It's also an aesthetically pleasing choice if you have a tank with tropical fish.

I want to paint my kitchen terracotta-coral (Devine"Glow"). What color should the cabinets be?

the Devine web site does not have accurate colors,at least when viewed with my monitor. I have a can left over from my prior house and I would like to use it in the kitchen. The kitchen is dark, so I need a light color. Also, what color for a backsplash?

You could do a creamy white, like sherwin williams' "pearly white" or a very light gray like "versatile gray."

does it work with bad bacteria ???? i have 30 gallon tank ....

yes that is correct, it works from various bacteria that inhabit the sponge that build up over a period of time.
They feed on the fish wastes, ammonia that is then turned into nitrates nitrite.

If you have a mechanical filter you can also add things like carbon to polish the water.

When I set up a new tank I take some filter material from an existing filter, that way it is already seeded.
