What would happen if I plugged a grounded submersible metal aquarium heater into an ungrounded outlet?

Is there a way to prevent fatal shocks? I have a submersible metal 300W aquarium heater which has a 3-prong plug and will have to use an 3 -> 2-prong adapter to plug it into the thermostat to maintain the water at 100 degrees F. I'm worried because the outlet isn't grounded.

Replace the two prong receptacle outlet with a GFCI receptacle outlet. That is compliant with the electric code and would be a safe installation. For you and the fish.

Don't take electrical advise from untrained and unqualified people.

Can you use regular tropical fish lamps in marine aquariums?

If I'm only keeping fish, live rock and fire shrimp in a marine aquarium, is it necessary to use marine lighting or will regular tropical fish lighting do?

Yes there is no problem with just fish and live rock. You don't need special lighting for live rock it still grows. Only when keeping special inverts and corals do you need special lighting.

Can I put Pond water with my freshwater fish tank?

It looks clean... there is no algea or anything floating in it. i got it from a nearby pond. will it kill my fish???

If there are fish in the pond and they look healthy, I see no reason why the water would harm your fish if you added some to your tank. Pond water may have helpful micro-organisms like rotifers, infusoria, daphnia, etc. and when these are introduced into your tank, they provide additional foods that are high in amino acids which are the building blocks of all cells. If you are curious about nature's abundant range of life forms, your idea may teach you some things. This is a good thing so go for it!

If i use pond care biofilter booster, how long until i can put my goldfish in my fish tank?

Recently bought it from Bunnings Warehouse. Can i put my fish in straight away while using pondcare biofilter booster or do i have to wait a few weeks before i put them in?

it depends how bit your aquarium is.
if it is really small, it only needs to run for a short amount of time (4-5 days)
If it is very large, cycle it for at least a week and a half.

I know this might sound dumb but I just want to know. I received today this heater precision submersible heater. I just want to know if it works like the other submersible heater. I have all my heaters in horizental positions and never had any problems

I hink the only time you would put the vertically would be when it's longer then the tank is high

if i used a gravel vacuum (siphon) for a 2.5 gallon tank will it just suck up all the water?

will it suck up the water before i can clean the gravel or what

You just need to use a very small siphon. I have the Top Fin mini and it works just fine. I can easily finish vacuuming the gravel before about 40% is siphoned out.

So, you have an aquarium that is in need of a good spring cleaning, but you don't know exactly how to go about it? Should you simply scrap the mess and start over? Should you try cleaning is without emptying it first? The answer is that tearing it down and completely starting over will remove the bacterial colonies produced in the aquarium that are beneficial to helping eliminate wastes. Unless the tank is extremely terrible, starting over should not be your first option; it should be a last resort.

You will need to have an algae scraper or pad, a razor blade (plastic for an acrylic tank), some bleach, a water siphon, a bucket, some lime remover and glass cleaner made specifically for aquariums, a filter media and a filter brush, some old bath towels and paper towels. You should start with the glass, move to the decorations such as rocks and plants and then clean the gravel. You should then move on to the outside of the glass and the fixtures and finish by cleaning or replacing the filter.

Give the glass a thorough cleaning on the inside using the algae pad. You can find a large selection of scrapers and pads for algae; from a scrubber with a long handle to magnetic scrubs. The small magnetic scrubs are a personal favorite, but just about any algae pad will do the job. You must purchase the algae pads at a pet store as opposed to buying one from the house wares department of your local store. They look just about the same, but the house wares pads can contain harmful chemicals or soap which could be lethal to fish. If the algae is really stubborn you will need to scrape it with the razor blade or plastic blade.

After you have thoroughly cleaned the glass, remove the decorations, artificial plants and rocks that have a significant build-up of algae on them. Do not use detergents or soaps when cleaning them. Although you might think you've completely removed the soap, there could and most probably would still be some residue. You can scrub them with the algae scrubber or scrape them clean, but for really tough problems you can use a 10% solution of bleach. Soak them for about 15 minutes and then scrub off the remaining residue. Rinse them well in running water and allow them to dry fully. Make sure the bucket you use has never held any type of detergent or soap. Vacuum the gravel while the other decorations are out of the tank.

Use a water siphon to vacuum away any debris in the gravel. You can choose from a variety of siphons and all of them work in very much the same manner. If you want to eliminate the need for a bucket, try the Python. There are also adapters that will allow you to filter the siphoned water back into the tank.

Be careful when using glass and lime cleaners as they may contain ammonia which is toxic to the fish. A standard lime cleaner is even worse. Use vinegar whenever possible or cleaners that have been specifically designed for aquarium cleaning. Always rinse thoroughly and leave nothing to chance.

If you want to clean the filter, you must wait a couple of weeks to do it. From the cleaning you already completed you have disturbed the beneficial algae and bacteria colonies on the decorations, gravel and plants. You haven't completely destroyed the eco system because the filter will still contain some of these beneficial bacteria. Simply allow the filter to run for a couple of weeks to restore the balance. Then you can clean it. If the filter is older than three weeks, replace it.

Cost of Refinishing an Oak Entertainment Stand?

I live in a small town so I don't even have an option of calling a place around here, and the closest big city is an hour away. I have a large oak entertainment stand that has a fish tank on it, and the water from the tank has damaged one whole section of it. It's fairly old and needs to be refinished anyway (It's still very solid and useful), but I was just wondering if anyone can direct me to a site where there are steps to refinishing a stand or desk myself or approximate costs of taking it to a professional?

"Removing the Old Finish
When refinishing furniture, you must do the most unpleasant part of the job first. Removing the old finish can be a cumbersome and messy task. For a while early in the process, until you start getting down to the wood underneath the mess, you may feel that you have completely ruined the piece. Have patience. Once you finally get to the point of final sanding the wood, you will have graduated from making a mess to creating a masterpiece. When you’re finished, you’ll be proud of what you were able to create.

You can remove old paint and varnish in a couple of different ways, primarily by sanding and by the use of chemical strippers. Heat guns can also be used for stripping, and are sometimes used as a supplement to the other methods in the removal of a particularly stubborn finish.

Sanding is a good method only if you have good sanding equipment and are experienced in the use of such equipment. If you are trying to remove an old finish by hand sanding or with a common orbital finishing sander, you’ll work yourself into a puddle and waste a lot of sandpaper. On the other hand, belt and disk sanders can remove finishes quickly, but since they are capable of removing so much material, you must be very careful not to disfigure the piece by sanding too deeply. It is also difficult to sand varnish from round or decoratively curved areas such as turned table legs.

Chemical strippers, commonly called "paint strippers," are an effective means of removing paint and varnish from wood furniture or projects. Using these chemicals is probably the fastest and easiest method for most people. Despite what you may read on the back of a can, if you want to do a really good job, some sanding will still be required after the old finish is removed by the stripper. "

Snails Koi Pond

What is the purpose of snails in koi ponds?

could you use alge eaters or would they live?

Actually IN the pond they are koi food, in the FILTERS they are an annoyance as they can clog it up. If snails aren't already in the pond , DON'T add them.

Algae that grows on the side of the koi pond is good for the koi and the pond. The floating algae and the kind that makes the water opaque green are not good and the snails don't get rid of those kind at anyway.
You would need a different tactic to get rid of those kinds of algae.

I think people got the idea of using snails for algae control in aquariums where it grows on the glass and makes it hard to see the fish. It's only for aesthetics as the algae that grows on the glass doesn't hurt the fish at all. In the pond it's not a problem.

You don't need algae eaters either, and in the colder parts of the U.S.A. they would die over the winter anyway.

There are many different types of aquarium snails many of which can be good to have in your tank. While some people think of snails as pests (and some are), others buy them on purpose to keep in their tanks. Sometimes, when you purchase plants for your aquarium tiny little snails can be hiding in the plants and you may wake up a week or two later and find your tank to be overrun by snails! Usually, however you can buy large snails at your pet store.

There are several types of snails you might consider. Each one looks different and has a different demeanor in the tank.

The Ramshorn snail is thusly named as itÂ’s shape looks like a rams horn. They come in black, red and sometimes checked patterns. This snail will dine on your plants and can reproduce quite quickly.

The Trumpet snail is a live bearing snail that eats that food and other stuff that has fallen into the substrate. They rarely eat plants so this is a good one to have if you have a lot of plants in your aquarium. Usually they hide during daylight and come out at night, but you will probably see them hanging out on the glass of your tank just below the water line when you first get up in the morning. The Trumpet snail can help clean the debris on the bottom of your tank.

The Pond snail is the one that typically hitches a free ride into your tank on aquarium plants. Shaped like a football, they reproduce quite quickly and have a veracious appetite for your aquarium plants quickly devouring them.

The Apple snail is a popular aquarium inhabitant and comes in 4 different species. These snails can eat aquarium plants so you will have to be careful. This snail can live quite a while and may grow as large as a tennis ball if given great care!

Most aquarium snails will do will in a community tank. Some eat algae and some eat the debris on the bottom so these snails can be quite beneficial to the tank. Other species eat aquarium plants, so be sure you know what you are buying if you have plants in the tank.

Snails get along good with many types of aquarium fish including Neon Tetras, Guppies, White Cloud Minnows and Danios. However, if you find that some uninvited snails have appeared in your tank, you might try introducing a Skink or Clown Loach into the tank as these guys will happily eat all the snails they can find.

Aquarium snails are a great way to add something a bit different into your tank, but you must be sure you get snails that are compatible with your fish. When in doubt just ask the clerk at your fish store and they will be sure to point you in the right direction.
