Aquarium Air Pump Question?

When you place the tubing into the water does the air stone just dangle?? Also, are only one line of very very small bubbles supposed to come out of the air stone at a time?

Most of mine dangle. You can weigh the tubing down with a rock or something if it keeps coming up.

The small stream of bubbles may be because your tank is deep and the pump is not strong enough to pump the air to the bottom of the tank where the water pressure is higher.

I use "TetraTec Deepwater" pumps for my tanks that are deeper than 12-14 inches. They are a little more expensive, but they sure put out a lot of air.

You may have an "old" airstone too, they get clogged with all kinds of crap and should be thrown away periodically to keep your pumps from working too hard and blowing out the little gasket inside (the gaskets are replaceable, BTW)

When browsing through your local fish store’s medicine and testing aisle, you probably won’t find a test for oxygen. The importance of sufficient oxygen in your pond water is often understated, and misunderstood. While most fish owners understand the importance of low nitrates, did you know that low oxygen levels is one of the most lethal silent killers in the fish hobby?

The most common cause of low oxygen levels in a Koi pond is the overuse of algaecide. When it comes to treating algae with chemicals, more is NOT always better. In fact, as algae die off, oxygen levels in your water plummet. Most experienced aquarium and pond hobbyists can attest to the horror of treating for algae and finding your entire fish stock dead within an hour from asphyxiation.

Unlike nitrite, nitrate and metal poisoning, there’s no treatment for low oxygen levels once the fish begin to starve for air and experience stress. It can kill within an hour, and if you don’t catch it quickly (i.e. within the first 10 minutes), your fish usually have no chance of recovery. Fish suffering from low oxygen levels will start to linger at the surface of the water, usually gasping for air. After the first 5-10 minutes, the fish will lose control of their swim bladder and begin to struggle to stay upright. Within the next 45 minutes or so, internal damage to the vital organs occurs. Literally, the fish shuts down, fails to breath and quickly dies.

For every pond owner with Koi, preserving oxygen levels can be very challenging. You have a very large volume of water, and if you’ve planned it your pond correctly, you have several deep pockets of water. You’re more likely to struggle with oxygen levels in your pond true if you’re establishing a new system, or struggling with algae in an existing one. Luckily there are some easy inexpensive ways to keep oxygen level high in your pond to keep your fish happy and healthy.

The first tool to keep oxygen levels high is circulation. A lot of people have the perception that air bubbles or air stones will provide sufficient oxygen. While these air systems help, it’s not the action of the air bubbles rising from the bottom that provides oxygen. Instead, it’s the breaking of the surface of the water that allows oxygen exchange. When you have sufficient movement across the surface of the water, your oxygen levels will rise.

When treating for algae, this becomes even more important. Add an extra power-head to your pond when you use chemicals such as algaecide. Point the power-head up so you have plenty of surface movement. This simple step prevents the tragedy of losing your precious Koi to something preventable as low oxygen levels in your water.

Another commonly overlooked tool in increasing oxygen level is plants. Plants also help to naturally control algae! When you add plants to your pond, the plants compete with microbial algae cells for carbon dioxide consumption. Keeping your pond at least 1/3 covered in plants keeps your water clear and algae free. Best of all, plants help release oxygen into the water, which keeps your levels in balance. A great alternative to potted pond plants are floating plants such as water hyacinth or water cabbage. The most successful ponds contain lots of plants, which keep your water and your fish healthy.

Remember to conduct regular water changes for your pond, depending on your bio-load. Koi are messy fish, and if you have a fully stocked pond, you should aim for one 25% change per week. Water changes replenish oxygen and vital buffers that help keep your water stable. There’s nothing more helpful than regular water changes for your pond. Remember- if you take care of your water, your fish will generally take care of themselves because they will have a naturally supporting environment that fosters health.

I wouldnt swim in it. I used to walk the bridge between Cincinnati and Covington and would see giant catfish surface all the time. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville, and several smaller cities do a great job of polluting it. It also had a tremendous undertow due to it's size.

How do you make the right decisions about the care of koi fish especially in terms of the appropriate size of pond? This article introduces you to the koi fish and then considers aspects of their care as they grow in size.

The Koi is one of the best fish and one of the most preferred fish for populating water ponds. It is found breeding in captive in millions of fresh water ponds all around the world. Even though the koi is not a typical schooling fish, they can be quite sociable as they do live quite well cohabiting with a number of other fish varieties especially in smaller ponds where these fish can manage to survive well together but when placed in a large pond area they may sometimes divide into smaller groups.

As they grow to a larger size, they are better able to survive in ponds that have a capacity of at least 500 gallons of water or even more. In case you are thinking of holding smaller koi fish in a small pond to start with, you may have to pay close attention to their size and their comfort in the pond as they continue to grow bigger.

You may have to increase the size of the pond or even give away the bigger koi in exchange for smaller ones. It is very important that you maintain the number of fish you have in each pond relative to the size of and the amount of the water that is present in the pond. Make sure to observe and monitor their size and number so you can judge how many fish it can hold at a maximum to keep the fish healthy.

You have to keep in mind that the health of this fish depends on the amount of space that is available in the pond. You also have to look at the cleanliness of the water as it might affect the health of the fish. As these fishes are expensive as compared to gold fish for example, so that's another good reason to look after them.

As they are cold water fish so try to maintain the water temperature between 61 to 75 Deg F. These fish can survive well in cold waters so they can also be kept outdoors during winter.

The pond has to be at least 3 feet in depth. So with the coming of winter the fish may tend to go under hibernation for a period during which time they slow down their digestive system, almost halting it altogether. Avoid feeding the fish when temperatures drop below 50 Deg F as food present in their stomach may be difficult to digest and be detrimental to health.

Watt Aquarium Heaters
Are there any small aquarium heaters like the "Hydor Mini 7.5 Watt Aquarium Heater" that have temp regulation?

I have a one gallon hospital tank and I need to add a heater to it. I can only seem to find heaters of 25 watts and larger with temperature regulation, and I think 25 watts is too large for the one gallon.

I don't think there are any. I've used one of those mini heaters, and I put it on a timer. I set the timer to be on for 15 minutes and off for 10. This gave me a constant temperature without cooking or freezing the fish.

The best way to do it is to sink your hospital tank inside a larger tank of heated water that does have a thermostat control. Fill the larger tank with water so it comes up to about an inch below the top of your hospital tank.

Not really, the screen itself has to be manufactured to waterproof standard, the rest you can deal with with a case with tight rubber edge seals, but the screen, you cant do much about it

With your own marine audio systems, you can transfer your car system to your boat. It is quite new in the market but a lot of stereo products have already been customized to be used on the boat.

Tank Marine Water
How long will it take after I fill my 120 gallon tank (Marine) for the water to clear?

I have a Marine tank and I filled it last night with the salt, decorinator, purple up, and bacteria. There's no on filter right now because one of the back internal overflows has a leak so the water is just kind of sitting there with one jet blowing it around. How long will it take to clear up or will it not take that long after the filter starts running?

I will agree with 3-4 days. I set a saltwater tank up for a friend and even with prerinsing the substrate, it was 3 days before the tank started to look clear, and 4 days before it cleared completely. And that was using a filter on the tank.

What makes them take longer than freshwater is that the salt makes things float [think about the Great Salt Lake in Utah]. It doesn't let the particles that cause the cloudiness settle out as quickly.

I have to agree that it wasn't necessary to add the purple up if you don't have live rock yet. And all that is is extra calcium and magnesium and trace elements that are already in your salt mix. So you don't really need to use it. And if you do have live rock added, but just didn't list it, your tank will also be cycling, and this causes cloudiness. This can take longer to clear completely because it involves the bacteria becoming established. It doesn't look attactive, but it will go away on its own. Just keep the pump/powerhead running because the bacteria need oxygen to survive. If the water loses the dissolved oxygen, you'll have added the bacteria for nothing too.

I will agree also that you should mix the salt in a separate container, then add it to your tank. If you add it directly, you won't have the correct salinity, it'll either bee to high [if you put the salt in first] or too low [if you add the water first]. Not having the salinity at the right level can kill all the beneficial oragnisms on the live rock, and any fish or things you add later. The only time this would be okay to do is in a bare tank that you're just setting up, or 1 that only has dry rocks or sand [nothing living].

Colony Lot
Are there any researchers or people who know a lot about the roanoke colony?

i need to find a guest speaker for my school project. anyone know any people near Oakland, California that studies or knows a lot about it? please answer quickly. i need to give my teacher sources by tomorrow.... Thx.

The Roanoke colony was a disaster before it started, like other colonies the people didn't have the slightest ideas what they were getting into.
When they landed they knew already they were lost and needed the support of the mother land, England. Storms from the fall and winter months made the ships wait to sail, this all took a tool on their supplies which were meager to start with.
The colony, left on their own while they waited for the arrival of ships bringing goods in vain, due to storms in the English waters.
I believe three years went by when the ships finally arrived, they found the colony empty, no bodies or grave sites.

They did find strange markings in trees that to this day are undecipherable.
There were/are tales of Indians many years later that had blue eyes and blond hair, the Mandan Indians from the Lewis and Clark expedition found them or some of them with blue eyes and blond and red hair. This is all speculation and some though the colony was attacked and taken prisoner and turned into slaves.

Fish food question, please help?

Has anyone used Ocean Nutrition brand foods? What is your opinion on it? I am looking to switch my fish food for my freshwater tropical community and this is the specific food I am thinking of http://www.petco.com/product/13168/Ocean-Nutrition-Formula-One-Flake-Food.aspx You can give me your opinion on any food made by Ocean Nutrition though. I have been feeding them Wardley Total Tropical but I have had this can for over a year and the quality has probably depleted in this time (although there is no expiration date on the can) and I want to switch them to something better.

Ocean is okay. Most of the flake/dry foods are decent, but not great. You should experiment with some frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. Makes your fish very healthy and happy!
