What is the longest living pet fish that you can buy and is cheap?

A fish you can buy in a pet store and isn't too big.
Also it is cheap and some what interesting.

Goldfish are cheap (under 10 cents for a feeder goldfish) and long-lived (the record is over 30 years), but they don't meet the "isn't too big" requirement. No, it's not true that they will stop growing if you keep them in a cramped tank, except of course because dead fish don't grow. That's like trying to keep a Great Dane small by keeping it in a shoebox! The reason most of Cassy's goldfish have died (4 out of 6, I believe it is?) is probably because they're in too small of a tank. A healthy goldfish can grow to a foot long, and need a huge tank.

Bettas are a good choice -- inexpensive, hardy, interesting, and moderately long-lived. Another option would be keeping a colony of fish, such as guppies, that replace themselves over time. You won't have the same individual fish, of course, but the colony can continue for decades.

If one of your biggest concerns is price, though, you should really re-think whether you're ready for fish at all. The actual fish are a small part of the cost of setting up an aquarium. Just one of my aquariums, if I'd bought it new (I actually got lucky on a used one) would have cost over $200 to keep $50 worth of fish, not to mention what I spend on fish food, water testing kits, and other odds and ends. Trying to set up an aquarium on the cheap isn't fair to the fish or worthwhile for you. Get a subscription to a good fish magazine and enjoy that until you have the resources to do it right.

Siphon Pump Syphon
Why is my siphon to clean out my goldfish tank not working very well?

I have a syphon by Biorbe for my fish tank which has a pump that you squeeze to get it going. It doesn't have very good instructions on it so i use it by putting the nozzle to the gravel and a bucket lower than the level of the tank, and squeezing the pump to get the water to come up.

If this is a "properly" designed tank siphon, the pump should only be needed to get the siphon started. Once the siphon tube is primed, gravity and the siphon do the rest.

The greater the flow rate, the higher the suction. This means the larger the discharge side and the lower the end of the tubing on the discharge side, the faster the water will siphon and therefore the better suction you should get.

need advice on diy aquarium tank cover?

i have metal halides on my tank and i need a cover for my tank so my fish won't jump out. what should i use? i need something that can with stand a lot of heat. and that light can penetrate through. any advice will be greatly appreciated

For metal halides the most commonly used cover is light diffusion grid, or eggcrate . Here is a pic of it. http://www.lightingdiffusers.com/Store/ProductDetail.asp?sku=EP-050-24 There is an up and down side to this stuff. One side has a larger opening than the other side. you want the large up and the smaller down.
You can not use glass or acrylic on a tank with halides as this type of a lid would deprive the tank of oxygen and cause huge temperature issues as well.

Another method I have seen is to use what is called hardware cloth. You need to build a frame for this stuff and paint it with an oil based paint to stop rust, but it will not cause you any light loss to the tank, even the light diffusing grid will cut down some light.

I personally have never used a lid, there only a few fish that are known to jump, Wrasses and firefish are the common ones. If you have a canopy then a cover really is not needed, were will the fish go? they cant get out so they just end up back in the tank.

Can I put a Bio-wheel in my power filter for a 29 gallon tank?

I wanted to know if putting a bio-wheel is possible so I can better filter out, and to grab the good bacteria at the same time. I have a Top-Fin Power Filter 30.

that will be hard to add a biowheel to that filter cause you might have to do some modifications. i would just visit drfostersmith.com and get the original power filter with the wheel. should be around 35 dollars.

Bulb Jebo

Help, I am starting a reef tank and I need assistance with corals/ anenomies/ etc...?

I am a first time reef tank owner. I have a 55 gallon saltwater aquarium with live sand, rock, fish, and a Jebo 260w lighting fixture consisting of two 65w 12000K Day light and two 65w Antinic bulbs along with 4 blue moon led light. My 1st question is what corals/ anenomies/ etc... should I get and what do they need to survive ex: light or other types of food. What are HARDY and cool looking also. My 2nd question is how should I set up my lighting timers. What are the specific hours each should be on. I have three plugs and three timers. My final question is do I need any other tank products such as protein skimmers etc... and what are they used for. Thanks for all your help.

This question is way to invovled for Yahoo Answers.
Let me briefly answer then sugegst some better resources.
1) What corals to get - we will comae back later to this
2) lighting timers. I would do the day light for 10 hours, the actinic can come on 30 minutes before and stay on 60 minutes after. The moon light can come on 45 mintes after the daylights go off(15 before the actinic go out) and stay on for 4 to 6 hours then all off.
3) YES. You need a protein skimmer. This is the single most important part of a reef system. They remove dissolved organics like protein from the water. Without one your corals will die from water quality pollution. You also need a pump for water flow. Many corals liek surge and water pulses. I suggest a wavemaker as well for this.

1) revisited. Your tank is not ready for corals yet. You have no skimmer, and no current. Even hardy corals need those. As for cool and hardy species, that is subjectie. The polyps and zooanthids are ahrdy. I think they are cool. You certainly cannot keep stony corals at this stage.

But help is easy.

1) Check out Aquarium Corals by Eric Borneman. You should buy it ASAP. It is the reference on keeping corals in captivity.

2) Check out http://www.reefs.org and http://www.reefcentral.org there you will find tons of great advice and have more direct access to reef information.

Freshwater Fake Aquarium Plant Question?

Hi, I am planning to have both live and fake plants in my tank to give it a lush look. The question is, I have bought some plastic plants from the Dollar Store from the plant decor section and they do look very much like plants for aquarium. Is it okay to put them in my aquarium after detailed washing?

live and fake plants together will look awful. i would choose either one or the other. personly ide choose live plants. look at my tank and youll see what i mean. this tank is only 7 months old.

There are many diseases that can affect your aquarium fish and once your tank is infected, there's a good change that all your fish can get sick. Luckily, keeping a disease free tank is not that hard. Most disease is a result of poor water quality so not overcrowding your tank and keeping a regular maintenance schedule is a must.

Most aquarium disease can be avoided by making sure your aquarium water is healthy. If disease does break out, doing a water change and treating the water for the particular disease is the best way to nip it in the bud. If you don't do these two things your tank is a disaster waiting to happen.

Neglecting the appropriate tank maintenance and partial water changes will allow toxins to build up in the water, basically polluting your fish's environment. As the water becomes more toxic your fish become more "stressed", the more stressed your fish becomes the easier it is for the micro organisms present in your aquarium water to infect your fish with various diseases.

I addition to insuring your aquarium has good water quality, you should also keep an eye on your fish each day so that you can be alerted to any signs of stress right away and take the appropriate action.

So how do you tell if your tropical fish are stressed?

Tropical fish don't react the same way to stress as people do, but there are some tell tale signs you can be on the look out for. Some things to look for include; fish rubbing themselves against the gravel or aquarium décor, fish hiding in the corner or under plants or rocks all the time, fish bobbing around with their fins close to they body and any growths or white fuzzy spots are some of the things that indicate aquarium disease.

Of course, the first step in treating aquarium disease is preventing it. Here's some steps to make sure your aquarium remains free of disease.

1. Don't overcrowd your fish tank. Your tank can only support so many fish - the more fish you have the more waste they create and if the filtration cannot handle the waste you end up with toxins in the water that can accumulate to dangerous levels over time. The larger the tank, the more fish you can have.

2. Acclimate new fish to the tank properly. When you bring a new fish home form the pet store, it's already been through quite a bit. Shipped from the breeders to the new store and put in a new tank, then transported into your tank all can be stressful to the fish. To acclimate your fish properly, make sure you float him in the bag in your aquarium for 10 minutes then open the back and introduce some of your aquarium water into the bag, let that sit for about 10 minutes and then let the fish out into your tank.

What is an good Aquarium light for 2.5 Gallon? desk lamp? LED light?

ok i currently have an 2.5 gallon tank that ive bought from petco for my betta =/ which use to live in an small bowl. i currently have java moss, anacharis , marimo ball (moss ball) in it without much of any light =/. and sad to say it looks like my anacharis is dying and my marimo ball looks alittle brown and my java moss looks the same.
